A virus is unlikely.
What often happens is that the screen backlighting failed.
These are cold cathode flourescent lamps (CCFL) that are soldered in behind the screen. To repair, you should take the PC to a good repair shop, because it is not easily done.Be sure to get an estimate of what the fix will cost.
If your laptop is still under warranty, have it exchanged.
