Well you should change the oil if its been sitting for awhile. Then change the spark plug paying attention to set the gap correctly. check and clean all air filters and fuel filters. Replace as needed.
Take off the mowing blade and inspect for any damage. If it looks good sharpen or have sharpened and put it back on.
also add fresh gas with recommended octane.
after this you should be ready to go for another great season of yard work.

Most likely it is the governor spring but you could have a stiff throttle shaft or a needle that is not closing properly allowing the carb to flow too much fuel into the engine.

Sears craftsman manuals?

You can't get sears manuals. If you remove the recoil assembly and turn it over you will be able to turn it. If the spring catches and starts to wind then you know your spring is good and you don't have to replace it. If it doesn't spring when wound replace spring. When ready turn till spring is fully wound ( can't wind anymore without force) then back it off until the rope holes line up. Install rope and handle and retract slowly. Pull handle a few times to make sure its not sticking and retracts properly. Reinstall on engine

How do i replace the side flap door on my mower

There is a rod that acts like a hinge pin. There is also a spring that keeps the flap door closed. The rod goes through both the flap and the spring at the same time. You need to hold the spring under tension while sliding the pin into both pieces at the same time. A little bit tricky, but do-able.

Hope this helps.

Pull string won;t recoil

The recoil spring has broken. These are available at any lawn mower parts supply store. The process of changing the spring is tedious but can be done by anyone with average mechanical ability. If you removed the recoil assy (and air shroud if it is riveted on) and took the assembly to a Lawn Mower Repair shop usually they will change out the spring while you wait. If you can't get the recoil assy off take the mower with you to the repair shop. Again most shops will fix it while you if wait but if they are very busy usually they are serviced within 24 hours.

If you do attempt this yourself check in the tips section of FixYa on how to change the recoil stater rope after replacement of the spring.

I highly recommend you replace the pull rope at the time of the recoil spring replacement.

One final note... there is a possibility that the pull rope spool has been damaged where the spring attaches.

Thanks for using FixYa,

Kelly

Lawn mower troubles

You must first remove the cover assembly which houses the starter pulley. Pull the old rope completely out until it no longer moves. Hold the starter pulley and remove the old rope. Try to wind the starter pulley spring tighter if possible. DON'T LET GO. The starter rewind spring must be wound before installing the new rope. After winding the spring, thread the new rope through the cover and into the hole in the pulley. Tie a good knot in the end and let the rope wind slowly into the housing. Once you have this done, replace the cover, get the proper length of rope, thread it through the handle, tie a knot in this end and your ready to go.
