Your monitor has Analog RGB, DVI and HDMI inputs. Any other hook ups will require additional cables and/or adaptors. It also has 2 additional audio inputs. I can't answer your question without knowing what kind of outputs you do have on you computer system. Most desktops have DVI out and would probably be your best bet using a DVI to HDMI adaptor with a HDMI cable out to your HDMI in on your monitor.Rgb cable would use svga out on your computer. The best way to get an answer would be to let me know the make and model of your computer system with avaiable outputs, if you know what the outputs are or, repost with additional info included. Dave
First, make sure the dvi cable is hooked properly to the computer and that the computer's VGA card's dvi output is set to work in the monitor's advance options.
Has this computer/monitor combinatioin ever worked before? Or did the message appear after successful operation of dvi to the monitor?
Perhaps, try to use a vga cable to the lcd monitor to see if that input works.
That does not depend so much on the computer but more on the monitor you have attached. Often monitors have a separate USB connection to the computer to enable external USB ports. If your monitor has such a connector, I would definitely use it - look also in the manual for the monitor itself. The cable usually used by Dell looks like this:
The VGA or DVI cable send only signals FROM the computer TO the monitor, so you will need another connection, if you want to use you webcam.

it works if you do it in bootcamp. but have to select external monitor instead of digital display under the intel graphics control panel. does anyone know of such an option under OSX?
Most of the time when this happens it is due to a bad monitor, if you have another pc try to hook this monitor up to that one to see if it actually works, these monitors sometimes get damaged during shipment!
