My Coolpix 5700 often suddenly goes into what I call a smearing mode, where the image in the viewfinder and on the LCD display is badly smeared, much as though one had poured multicolored paint down the image.
There is no particular pattern to it happening, though I notice that it will often happen when the camera is swung slowly (or quickly, for that matter) from dim light scene to a scene in which there is a bright part, such as a window inside a room. Does it inside or outside, day or night. The smearing (and other colored artifiacts) may or may not show up in the image when it is displayed on the camera LCD. There is often noticeable smearing of very bright parts of an otherwise okay image.
I tried "reset all" to no avail. No difference.
As suggested in owner's manual, I set camera to "Clear /Clean Image". No difference.
Does it on its own battery power or when plugged into AC adapter.
Sometimes, turning the camera power off and on will clear it up, but usually only temporarily.
I am NOT getting the horizontal (window blinds) lines reported by some users.
It's very annoying, because I never know if I'm going to get a good image or not, and when the smearing happens, it is impossible to compose the photo.
Is this problem related to the bad CCD problrem that Nikon will fix?
It sure sounds like the CCD is acting hinky on you from time to time. Check out http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/coolpix.html and call the 800 number in the advisory for better advice from Nikon repair people. This problem seems to be manifesting itself with lots of different kinds of screen displays. Mine just went black. Nikon was very good about making the free repair - all I paid was the cost of sending the camera to them. Don't send your battery, memory card, camera strap or lens cover. All they need is the camera body.

This is a very common problem which affected millions of cameras manufactured using Sony's 5MP CCD. The symptoms you describe are absolutely classic but to confirm it try viewing older shots taken before the problem arose using your camera's LCD: they should display as normal.
Contact Sony in your country: they have been offering free repairs for this problem, my 2004 Sony DSC-V1 was repaired under the scheme last summer.
When you get your camera back, be on the lookout in the few months afterwards for what look like water droplets on every picture. These indicate a faulty repair where the technician has got something on the CCD and Sony won't accept responsibility for further remedial work after a certain mount of time. I found out the hard way when I noticed this second fault last month but Sony said I'd left it too long before notifying them!
CCD problem if the pics are also with green ghost image if u see on PC then my friend see if that camera is on nikon service advisory otherwise they won't cover it after warranty if thats not in list if, luckily if on list then they will replace it free of charge try it on their website
CoolPix 5700's have a common image sensor failure. Check with Nikon for recalls, this may be the cause of your issue.
Alternatively the shutter may be stuck open, causing too much light to reach the sensor and causing over exposure as well as lines across the image.

The symptom you describe is caused by a stuck shutter inside your lens. When the shutter is stuck closed no light can reach the image sensor and the result is a black image on the screen and on photos.
You can try GENTLY tapping the camera on a hard surface to free the stuck shutter, but be extremely cautious because this can easily further damage the camera. If that does not work you will have to get the unit serviced or replace it. Check with Nikon for recalls or service bulletins. You can find good repair services online as well.
