The Start button is broken, the user interface board is not working, or the machine/motor control board is out. Perform the diagnostic test to verify all machine functions. The Start button is indeed broken if machine functions work fine during the diagnostic test.
Put the machine in standby mode by plugging it in with all indicators off, or with only the Clothes Clean or Done indicator on. Select any one button except POWER, START, and STOP then follow the steps below, using the same button.
Press/hold for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds, press/hold for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds then press/hold for 3 seconds and release. All indicators on the console will be lit for 5 seconds with 88 showing in the Estimated Time Remaining two-digit display to indicate that the diagnostic mode has been entered successfully. If indicators do not display as described, the press/hold and release procedure may not have been performed within the time frame necessary for successful entry. Repeat the procedure and you may use another button to ensure this was not the cause.
The program then checks for saved fault codes. Post back any saved fault code for further advice. If there are no saved fault codes, all indicators on the console will momentarily turn off, then turn back on with 88 displayed and after 5 seconds, the diagnostic test begins with C0 displayed and the lid may be opened. Press the same button used in activating the diagnostic test above to advance through automatic test steps. Allow step C1 to complete before advancing to the next steps. Post back the result fro further troubleshooting advice.
Run the console and indicators diagnostic test if machine functions work fine during the diagnostic test. From Standby (Off) Mode press and release (key-dance) the following buttons within 4 seconds:
The two-digit display will show dt if the activation is successful then within 5 seconds press START and all indicators in display will be lit with 88 is displayed. Press START a second time and this turns off the status indicators and the two-digit display with all other indicators remain lit. Press START a third time and this turns on the status indicators and the two-digit display with all indicators are lit.
Rotate the WASH CYCLE selector knob back and forth and all indicators will toggle on or off. Press the buttons to verify function. and the corespondent indicator will toggle on or off and a beep tone will sound. Pressing SOIL LEVEL, SPIN SPEED, WATER LEVEL or LOAD SIZE, and WASH/RINSE TEMP will cause all indicators above these buttons to toggle on or off at one time. Press the STOP or POWER button at any time to exit diagnostic test modes.

Hello, I had the same problem. I installed a new drain pump, and it's back up and running. The pump was $60 on Ebay, I bought it a few months before, because my old one had a small leak in it which I repaired, and I thought I could get a few more months out of it before I installed the new one. I guess it finally stopped working, and thankfully I had the new on ready to go. Really easy installation if you are or you know a handyman. 3 screws, disconnect 2 hose clamps and unplug the power connector on the pump. Easy.

The key/dance does not work on mine. I tried holding the start button for 5 seconds to reset the lid lock and after 3 seconds, the 88 and all lights lit up. The only light not lit was the lid lock. I have not been able to reset it. I'm now searching for how to disable the lid lock so I can wash clothes.

SOURCE: push start button on control panel - machine does not start
only 2 things can cause this.
1 the control is set to lock out mode. just hold the lock button for 5 seconds and it should go back to normal mode.
or 2 the controls user interface has an internal failure. its the part that has the switches and tells the computer what to do. either way call whirlpool and see if its still covered by their warranty.
of yeah and the 3rd thing is you have no power to unit. make sure the outlet is good by trying something else in the same outlet, like a light or hairdryer.

leave the door open and try it again if it does the same thing as before the door lock has gone

I had the same problem. Come to find out, there is a small piece of plastic on the control board that makes physical contact with the switch. This little piece was broken off. I disassembled the board and super glued the plastic piece back on which worked until I could replace the board.
