Hi,
I'm trying to troubleshoot a subzero 542 ice maker that does not make ice...at least not anymore. One day the arm did not go up as ice filled up and kept making ice until it gummed up the works. We heard a grinding type of noise and shut off the ice maker.
So now we finally removed the ice and all. If I turn it off for a while, then back on, the maker fingers do a full cycle like it's trying to harvest, the arm goes up, back down, etc....like it should.
But then that's it. When it was working, we used to hear other noises (maybe the water valve??) but don't hear any noises at all now. It just runs the cycle once and then sits for hours.
Someone told me to check if the water valve is getting power. I really can't find the valve. There is a false back panel behind the drawers. Is it behind that? If so, how in the world do you remove it to get at the thing?
Anyway, do any experts have a recommendation on a couple of things to check and how to check them? I don't mind buying new parts, but really don't know what to buy, and can't seem to easily see how to removed anything even if I did!
Thanks!
Jim

That on/off arm...you should be able to move it and it will likely make a small click when the switch goes on or off. That arm controls the ice making. There is also a float, is it working freely? It has a switch too. Ultimately, the water is controlled by a solenoid valve. It may be defective. Many of these units are removable to test the switches with a multimeter. Turn off the water and remove to test. Some parts are available...some parts are by the unit only.

also discovered if ice box auger not engaged exactly right with auger drive motor, then ice box won't be able to be pushed back the last half inch to engage the secret "turn on the ice maker" switches. Juice storage brackets also won't engage since ice bucket not flush with front of cover.

When the refrigerator was moved, the freezer door may have shifted downward. The switch for the freezer light is on the top of the freezer so it turns off the light when the door closes. The icemaker is also connected to that switch so it won't dump ice when the door is open. The solution is to adjust the door elevation. The easier solution is to attach something to the portion of the door that hits the switch. I used a white coverplate for a wall light switch.

If your ice maker has stopped producing ice completely, check these, in this order:
In either case, the ice maker should begin producing ice again. Also make sure that the temperature is 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won't cycle properly.

Yes, it's a built-in fridge/freezer side-by-side, model 542. It looks like the ice maker and drawers below are all inside of some type of slide-in thing, but not sure if I can just remove screws and all, and if there is a way to get a better idea of the problem before tearing things apart.
Thank you for your help!!
I have the same issue. Does anyone know how to get to the water valve? There is some false panel on the back of the freezer but not sure how to remove everything and even if that is were the valve is.
Can anyone help or can send a service manual that shows more details?
Thanks!
