Could be a paper jam inside the machine(pick up: between the tray and cartridge compartment or EXIT: Between fuser and EXIT UNIT.

For some reason it is not reading the memory chip on the cartridge. You can run your finger over the reader which is located top right inside after removing the cartridge just to make sure it is clean. I have never had to replace the reader ever, but the cartridges many times.
the most common problem that causes the top cover not to close is the toner cartridge not being seated. Pull it out and reseat it. Why did you open the cover in the 1st place. If it was to install a new cartridge, try putting the old one back in. If it works, the replacement has a problem. If the cover doesn't close with the toner cartridge removed, then there probably is a linkage problem. Something may be broken, like the "print cartridge drive arm". Go out to www.hp.com.
Check the media settings for your paper trays. Make sure they are set properly, also check the diver media settings. Is the problem happening with a specific print job? If it is check the page setup for that document.
