I have a Craftsman Wire feed Mig welder! Model No. 196.205690. I Know how to use a arc welder and how to use cutting torchs. I have a few questions for someone to help me with. I do not have the 75% argon - 25% Co2 gas! Is it better to use the gas and what does it help? My other question is I can not get any weld to stick! I read the Owners Manual and the trouble shooting section and nothing seems to be wrong! No loose connection inside the welder,Proper extension crod, Proper type & size of welding wire, Good ground, Proper contact tip, Gun connection tight, correct polarity, Clean & Dust free metal! What should i do?

You have to use the gas 75-25 for steel and cast iron 100% argon for welding alumanuan

  • Anonymous Feb 03, 2011

sorry was trying to get to the spell check and hit the wrong button, ok back to what i was saying before i had a brain fart. you need the 75- 25 for welding steel and cast iron and you need 100% argon if you are going to weld aluminum. the gas provides a shield around the weld to keep impurities out this is why you are not getting any kind of penetration, the only way to mig weld with out gas is to use a flux core wire but it makes an ugly weld and is somewhat harder to work with. by the way if you can stick weld then you can mig weld it takes much more talent and control to stick weld.

I have a Lincoln power mig 216 and as soon as you strike an arc on metal my feed wire either kinks or breaks at the feed rollers and starts rolling out the side I have replaced the tip, liner and diffuser

Are there any kinks in the feed line from the spool to the tip that is causing the wire to not feed? Cut a length of wire and pull it though the feed line to see if there is a lot of friction in it, that would prevent wire feed. Finally, check the wire size - I know, but it is worth checking just in case.

The wire feed on my welder will not work.

Maybe you can get lucky like I did . Some times the acr volt selector switch gets corrosion in it and wont let the circuit board know to send power to the wire feed motor. You can cycle this arc volt. switch in my case it is the a,b,c,d,e, switch back and fourth a few times and this will brake the corrosion and your wire might feed again as mine did . This corrosion build up happens from not using and or sollecting the switch much usually on a welder at hm that gets very little use. it is common good luck .
