I plugged in my 1TB WD hardrive and noticed that it did not show up as the name I had renamed it instead it showed up as Local Disc. When I try to access it it just crashes windows, I tried this on my laptop and my PC and same thing. Also the light on the front that usually blinks when loading then stay on when recognized now keeps blinking as i try to access it but if i go off my computer and onto anything else the light stays on. It is also not the cable as I have tried it with my other WD hardrive and it works fine.

It could be that the drive was infected by a virus. The Virus dumps an file with the name autorun.inf onto the drive and everytime u plug the drive into a pc - it wants to run the virus that autorun points to.

Try something - unplug the hard drive, then press the SHIFT key and while holding it, plug in your hard drive. DONT let go of the shift key until the drive has been detected (around 10 seconds should be find) then let go of the shift key - if the drive shows up under "my computer" DONT double click on it to open it as that will jsut run the virus again ... instead .. RIGHT click on the driver and choose explore. If you can see the drive this time - it is a virus and the best option is to remove the virus or format the drive - post another question if this does not work.

Good luck

I cant rename my toshiba canvio 3 1tb

Check to see if there is a file in the root directory called "autorun.inf". (Make sure you can view hidden files.) If there is, either delete it, or move it to a backup folder. Now you should be able to rename your portable hard drive.

If you don't see the new name take effect right away, Safely remove the drive, unplug it and plug it back in. The changes should show up immediately.

The application preferences file is damaged. Please remove it and re-launch QuarkExpress [297] Where is the preferences file located? (Version 9, Windows 7)

The preferences file will be in the User\AppData folder.
C:\Users\ your user name\AppData\ Local\Quark\QuarkXPress 7 is the location in Vista with version 7 and it should have a similar location in Windows 7.

C:\Users\ your user name\AppData\ Local\Quark\QuarkXPress 9 is likely. (AppData has 3 folders - Local, Local Low and Roaming.)

You should not delete the folder. Instead rename it. Right click on the folder and select Rename. Then name it
old_QuarkXPress 9.

This could be a hidden file. If you click Start and then enter Show hidden folders. Then put the bullet on Show hidden files, folders and drives. Then click Apply and OK.

If moving the AppData location to another folder doesn't solve the problem, check if there is a Preferences file in the Program Files folder (
C:\ Program Files\ Quark\ QuarkXPress 7.x for the old version.) If the new version is built for the 64-bit OS, it might be in the x64 Program File folder. Again rename the file if it is in that directory.

I hope this helps.

Hard Drive Not detected/Windows still boots

I notice that in all of your ramblings that you do not mention the BIos settings
AS everything is decided in the bios it is important that you start there
those settings decide ( after the pc does the POST checking process that checks all the hardware of the pc)) which area the system uses to boot from
so you select --boot from hdd 1 as first option, next boot cd next option etc so that the pc knows where to look for the os (win7) system
if you are not aware of how
to get to bios --- shut the pc down
restart and hold down del button and the bios screen will come up moving around the bios menu is by the arrows and enter button
in there you will find a password section
for your benefit , ignore and move on

WD 1TB working properly for some time

Make sure the power supply (power brick) for the mybook is working. (unplug both ends or the power cable and plug back end)

do the same for the USB cable. Still no luck? Plug the USB connector into a different port on the PC and see if that changes your luck.
