Can you use the twist-barrell zoom lens on a Sony DSLR camera (or any DSLR) when the camera is set to auto-focus? I've been told that this damages the gears in the lens if you do. Thanks for your help.

You can zoom completely independent of the focus.

Some lenses immediately override the autofocus when it senses you turning the manual focus ring. Other lenses don't, and you can damage the lens by forcing it. It depends on the lens, so you'll have to consult the documentation for the specific lens.

Hi. I'm looking for a place where I can buy a usb cable for my GE A950 camera. Someone is lending it to me and they can't find the one that came with the camera. I am also having trouble with the focus of...

Hi -

A simple solution for the cable is to buy one at a store like Best Buy, although you might save some $$ by getting it at a large computer store, like MicroCenter or such-like for cheaper. Be sure you have the camera with you so they can match the two USB ends -- the one for your computer is the usual one; for the camera will likely be the smaller one (there are a couple of smaller sizes, which is why it's good to have the camera).

If you aren't able to take the camera with you, try going onto the GE website, search for the camera model, download a specification document that will tell you what size it takes.

As for the focus issue, I don't know about this model specifically, but most all digital cameras will lock onto the object you focus on if you press the shutter-release half-way down. Then, maintaining the half-press, reposition your camera to your liking and then press the rest of the way to take the picture. Focus-and-hold, reposition, press all the way. Might take a little getting used-to, but the skill comes quickly.

Good luck on your photo class. They're great for starting out -- and even for experienced photo enthusiasts as a refresher!

Above all, take lots of pix, and have fun!

Hope this helps!

The auto focus won't focus on images from far away, 2 feet. It only focuses at 2-3 inches

Most CMOS web-cams have a focusing ring round the lens which rotates to give you basic adjustment - after that the auto-focus should sharpen up the image

Pictures out of focus

Keep the camera on AUTO, and refocus on every shot (push the button down until you see the green cross-hairs in the center of your subject - let up and then "snap" your photo).

To change the battery - open the door on the bottom right.

Powershot S1 Digital Camera: Flash won't fire

Make sure the camera is not in Document mode . Document takes a picture with added contrast so text stands out. Make sure the camera is not set to Infinity focus . When you select Infinity Focus, the camera automatically turns off the flash and auto focus so you get sharp, clear pictures. Make sure the camera is set to Fill, Auto, or Red Eye flash. See your camera manual for details about setting the flash.

DSC-F717 autofocus stops working

I was first going to also suggest a reset. Does your manual focus function correctly from near to far(turning the focus ring in manual) and does the wide to tele motion function fully and smoothly? (lens adjustability without restriction) Was your camera exposed to extreme heat or elements?(beach sand or water of any kind) It may mean electronics only or a mechanical restriction causing an electronic malfunction. A last resort may mean your closer documenting when or how frequent it happens and maybe ultimately a trip (for your camera) to Sony. Get a price quote for repair since you might strike a happy medium of using the camera differently (manually focussing) without exceeding the value of the camera for repair costs.
