I have 2 new Whirlpool Estate Dryers and neither one of them will start. I have hooked up the wires (no ground wire-don't have in my house) and when I set the dryer it will not start. I looked for a switch to turn on/off, thinking that this might be the problem, but didn't find any. Please help!

Do you have a voltage meter to test? you want to have 220 volts on L1 to L2.. this would be the red and black wires. this is where you need to have 110 volts, between L1 and N which should be white wire at middle of terminal block and 110 volts at L2 and N...this means your getting proper voltage to the dryer..if your not getting power on one side or the other..this is why its not running.
check this and let me know...there is alot of other things to consider if not this...

no,you need to connect the green wire to any metallic part of the dryer, even if the white wire on the neutral terminal has a bonding strap from this terminal to the metallic dryer case as you should never connect more than one wire under any type of terminal unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer

DON'T DO IT!!! Get an electrician to install a 4 prong outlet for you. Your exposure is DEATH, be safe and get the correct outlet.
When some types of failures happen, you can charge the CASING of the washer. then you can become the connection to ground.
Get the correct outlet, return the three wire plug.

Plug problem

On a three wire configuration, the ground and the negative are tied together at the center position, using the dryer ground strap. Following is a description of the difference between three and four wire. Hope it helps you.
These two pictures illustrate the power wiring on a the terminal of an electric dryer. The one on top is the old-style three-wire configuration. Most people have this type in their homes. New code changes, though, require that dryers now have a four-wire cord, shown on the bottom.
Besides the number of wires in each cord, there are two important things to notice. First, in the four-wire configuration, notice that the dryer's grounding strap is folded back on itself. The whole point of the four-wire cord is to separate the ground from the neutral. The green wire (the "new" extra wire in the four-wire cord) is attached to the dryer cabinet. In the three-wire configuration, the grounding strap is left intact and the neutral and ground are tied together.

Sure hope this helps you find a resolution to your delimma! Best wishes.

*First ; before starting unplug unit or shut off breaker.

you should be able to match up color for color on your dryer, the fourth wire, green (ground) screws to the chassis, or cabinet. if your wires aren't coded as you say, it is red, white and black, left to right. see picture I've supplied.981ddeb.jpg

Whirlpool Estate Dryer barely heating

Four wires on the new cord.
Red and Black go to outside screws on the terminal.
White goes to the middle terminal.
Green goes to the cabinet ground screw near the terminal plate cover.
