There is a terrible smell in the dishwasher

We can't get rid of the terrible smell from within the dishwasher. It smells like garbage. We have tried many home remedies and had a service agent come out. What could be causing this and what should we do about it?

I have had this Bosch diswasher less than 2 months and it has smelled awful from week 1. Running it frequently does nothing to alleviate the smell. Is there anything that can be done?

All DW that I know of will have water sitting at the bottom.. it keeps the seal moist..check your drain line make sure its clean and not clog... when your DW goes into drain listen to see if its drainning like it did when you first used it... I'll check back later..

Probably stays damp inside. That allows any trapped food particles to get funky. Clean it, wiping door seals and dispenser compartments, clean the filters, especially the drain filter if any. Then run on its hottest cycle with a cup or so of vinegar in it. That should clear up the smell. In future, let the beast get dry inside after use. Normally it will be pretty dry at the end of the cycle, but if you cut short the drying time to save on electricity, then you will have to leave the machine open for a little while, and open a crack all the time.

Why is there a foul smell in the dishwasher?

You might want to check the drain hose. It should be mounted up, or have a loop that is higher that the garbage-disposal port that it feeds into. If it is not mounted up, or have a high-loop, it is possible that water from the sink and debris from the garbage disposal can backwash into the dishwasher, and that would be the cause of the smell. Alternatively, it is possible that the heater is not working at all, so dishes aren't drying, and the water isn't getting hot enough to kill the bacteria, mold, and mildew that can form if the water isn't getting heated during the wash cycle.

Dishwasher has a terrible odor in it. I'm guessing it came from an empty sauerkraut glass jar and lid I put through the wash, heated dry and sanitize cycle. How do I get rid of that nasty, something...

Check whether the smell comes from the main drain. Pull your dish washer drain hose and check.

Leave dishwasher door open for few hours. Hope no rate has died inside the machine.

Run a empty wash several times!

My dishwasher has a smell, like rotting food, even when it is empty. How to I get rid of this smell?

Hi- It is probably rotting food. No matter what anyone tells you you have to rinse your dishes, dishwashers are not garbage disposals even though some manufacturers say otherwise. Try cleaning the filter, if you can't get to it you'll need to have a Tech out to do it. You can also try running a short cycle with a few tablespoons of bleach. As well, don't use "natural" soaps, they tend not to break-down grease well. Good luck.

Terrible smell from the washer. This is a new

do not use baking soda this will react with your detergent and leave smelly deposits and reduce the wash performance modern good quality detergents contain everything needed for a good wash result and a sweet smelling machine. try a hot wash with detergent and an empty load to get rid of smell.

We had a power failure whilst we were away for a week and all the contents of the freezer were rotten . the meat created a terrible smell which we cannot get rid of. how can we get rid of the smell because...

Too late, you'll have to get rid of it because the smell has been absorbed into the insulations....and when you bleackh the inside cabinet, the warm food will absorbe the smell again.

SHU43 Bosch Built-in dishwasher

Try running citric acid (3 tablespoons) through.
You can get it from a drug store.
Or, run 1/2 cup vinegar through.
Do this in both the dish washer and the disposal.
After doing this try running some water into the disposal and then see if the next time you run the dishwasher if it still smells.
You could be having a problem with water not staying in the drain trap under your sink that is why if you run water and fill the trap, then you will find out if it was the dry trap that caused the smell from sewer gases backing up into the house trough the garbage disposal.

Bad smell

It sounds like your dishwasher does not have an air gap. Newer dishwashers come with an air gap installed, but they can be taken out. A quick fix for this is to:

Check the drain line under the kitchen sink. The drain line is supposed to run from the bottom of the cabinet, and run as high in the cabinet as you can get, (up to the bottom of the counter top) then connect the drain. This is called an air gap, and helps keep a little water in the drain line, which will prevent sewer gases from entering your dishwasher, and garbage disposal.
