I have a 2002 il35, with 50,00 miles. i can understand the noise in the front end from expansion joints in the road, but when i drive over a man hole cover on a very smooth street the front end shakes and makes a clunking nose. other than that the cars rides smooth roads. what is going on here. nick

Check the front steering damper. The steering damper is a shock that is mounted horizontaly in the front. The damper is bad if you see oil leaking from it or if the car has high mileage and never been replaced.

It could be lash in the differential which is normal, but it could also be a loose u-joint in the driveshaft. Check the rear driveshaft u-joints.

Good Morning, I can imagine it is a bumpy ride after you do that. Normally with normal wear and tear the front suspension gets worn and it could be anything from a tie rod end to shocks or springs, and could even be ball joints there ae so many moving pieces up front what I would recommend is taking it in and getting a front end inspection done by a local garage and they can pinpoint which piece or pieces it is. Hope this helps, and if youhave any questions please feel free to ask.
Thanks,
Joey

My 2004 I35 with 65K miles now has a clunk near the right front wheel when I drive over even small bumps. I was told my struts were bad, so I had them replaced (for $1300 at the dealer). The clunk was not as bad, but after a few hundred miles, it is back again.
