Toshiba MK2035GSS 200 GB SATA Hard Drive Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jan 31, 2011

My laptop was broken [BIOS issue] and I had its hardisk enclosed so that I Can use it as an external drive. The disk is SATA and was partitioned into 2 using Windows Vista [the broken laptop's OS]. I plugged the disk [through a USB] to a PC but the PC cannot display the disk in it's Explorer. This happened in both Ubuntu OS and a Windows XP SP3 OS. The disk is listed though in Windows XP's Device Manager Disk Drives but not in Disk Management. Please help me recover my disk...

Did not work. I get an NT_read error.
I also tried some things like removing the upperfilters and lowerfilters in registry and they all failed.
I am thinking if the disk needs to be set to slave for it to work.
    I hope it does.

May I also add that the disk has 2 OS' when it was in the laptop. Ubuntu and Windows. I don't know if these messed up the sectors of the disk.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations fanaudi.

Yesterday, I found out that no jumper settings are necessary for SATA 2.5" disks. So my plan failed.

I retried using Linux/Ubuntu's Disk Utility to read my disk but there's a READ ERROR encountered. So I guess I have to give up at this point.

Also, I would just like to document, in case someone encounters the same problem, that when the HD was in the laptop I set a password for it. So everytime I boot I have to enter the HD password before going to either Ubuntu or Windows log-in.

When my BIOS failed the BIOS password together with the HD password was changed (or reset) to an unknown value. I tried resetting the BIOS by shorting terminals (as discussed in a forum) but it did not work. That is when I decided that the laptop is severely broken and I decided to take my HD off.

Hope someone finds a solution to this problem or someone can conclude that the disk is irreparable. Until, then I will just keep my HD and hope that I can save enough money to have the HD checked in a specialized office.

What once succeeded with me was to connect a disc right inside a desktop ( IDE 3,5" ) but I don't know for sure if you can with a laptop's one .
Otherwise , i' m afraid you will need to ask a specialized office to do the job for you and it will cost you a lot of monney .

Once the hd placed Inside the desktop as secundary , each OS should recognize it's own data .
Maybe you will need to try on two different desktops : Windows and Mac .

Many thanks for the feedback sjhs97 . A disc read error is not only an error but also a horror !
The best solution is indeed often to bring your unit to a professional recovery center , otherwise the risk is big you will lose all of part of your data .
    Best regards ,

Did not detect the additional sata hard disk?

Have you tried connecting the SATA hard-drive to a different computer, just to prove that it is not a "dud" ?

Is the SATA hard-drive getting power?
(It should warm-up a bit, and you make feel it vibrate as it spins.)

Have you tried a different SATA cable between the hard-drive and the SATA connector on the motherboard?

Check the BIOS settings, to be sure that detection of SATA drives is "enabled".

I have a hp pavilion dv 1659 us (dv 1000) the sata drive goes bad

It will recognize the new drive if you were able to "migrate" your data from the old drive. If not, you can clean install by booting from an optical drive (changing your boot order at start-up) and using a new OS disk or your recovery disks. You might be able to perform a remote partition & format and install from one drive to the other with USB external enclosures for each drive and another computer (depending on the 100G drive's condition). I hope this helps.

No internal hard disk found

Hi there.
Use the Vista CD to create the new partition, but first you have to delete the old partition first, (the 220GB partition not the 10GB one because that will be the recovery partition).
Get a calculator and work out your new partition, for example 50GB is 50x1024MB so that will be 51200MB.
When you have deleted the 220GB partition select NEW and input your newly worked out partition and carry on from there, to activate the other partition just format it.

Please post back with the results and for anymore help if needed.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

HP laptop

The problem is that the hard drive in the unit is a SATA (serial) drive. And The XP cd will not see your hard drive without the SATA drivers. You said that you clean out your hard drive, did you delete all partitions? HP puts the recovery files on a D partition if it is still there, there is hope for recovering Vista and all the drivers. If not you may need to order the Recovery cd's from HP.

Try this when you boot the laptop, hit F11 as it is booting. See if the recovery menu comes up. If it does, than proceed with a full recovery. If it does not, then you will need the cd's.

Here is a HP document on how to add serial drivers to a XP installation

You may have to copy and paste the link into your browser.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.

Formating hardisk with sata connection

1) Be sure that your motherboard support SATA - See Bios

2) Using the Win XP installation CD you can format the drive. If you cannot load windows during the installation hit F6 to charge the SATA drivers.

If your sata drive is working like a second disk, you can format it directly from windows.
Start>> Control Panel >> Admistrative tools >> Computer Management

Or using any partition tools...

Acer laptop is not detecting harddisk

kiran,
i thought you have SATA interface, in that case your XP will not be able to access your HDD. But now as you told there is no option for SATA means you don't have SATA interface in your motherboard and the problem might be in your HDD.
  1. So, check out your HDD connection from motherboard and try to install again if no luck then do the following step.
  2. If you have important data/files on your HDD make a backup copy. Then make try to delete all partition and make new partition, then proceed further installation OR if you have recovery disk try to use it to recover your system as factory setting.

Thanks
Iqbal
