Microsoft Excel for PC Logo
Posted on Jan 30, 2011

Today using Excel 2007, I tried editing an existing document that I'd imported from another computer. All functions were grayed out, and no text could be typed nor any cells edited. So I tried with a new spreadsheet. The functions and buttons work, but I cannot type in any cells, nor paste. Help? -Josh

The sheets might be protected. To remove the protection, go to the "Review" tab, in the Changes group click on "Unprotect Sheet"

SOURCE: how to protect a single cell in excel from modification

Found on the internet and it seems to work:

The default setting for each cell is for them to start locked. So, you first need to highlight ALL cells in the sheet, right click, choose format, go to the Protection tab and take the tick out of the Locked box.

Now no cells are locked.

Now you need to select the one cell you want locking. Right click, choose format cells, Protection tab and then put a tick into the Locked box.

Locking the cells does not take place until you have locked the sheet. So go to Tools, Protection and Protect Sheet. Add a password of your choosing, and put a tick into every option available to you, EXCEPT the very top option. "Select locked cells" should NOT have a tick in it.

OK that to confirm, and hey presto, that cell can no longer be selected, edited or erased unless you unprotect the sheet by entering the password you chose.

SOURCE: text in excel textbox turns to gibberish

It may be a font issue... did you change the font of the typed-in text to a non-True Type face? For every typeface there are two fonts: a screen font to display on your monitor and a printer font for printing,

If somehow there is confusion or corruption in the Excel file contents about exactly which font is specified at a given point in the text box (e.g.if you type like I do with lots of backspaces, which are actually special codes that can cause such corruption), then the misfire between screen and print fonts can cause the text data to be corrupt. It seems to be an operating system issue (did you make a lot of changes to fonts on your system?) or something wrong with your personal installation of Office 2003 in any case, because Excel 2003 is a very stable release. To fix this I would try examining the Windows\Fonts folder using a third-party tool or comparing its contents to a known-good Windows installation (or simply copy and paste your typed paragraphs into Notepad and re-paste it into a new text box in a New Document (starting fresh with a new Excel worksheet could solve it all by itself).

What is the "&" symbol for in excel 2010?

The "&" symbol is commonly known as "ampersand" and it is a calculation operator. Ampersand can be used in Excel 2010 to join text items from different cells. It functions much similar as "CONCATENATE" function. The output value you will get by using ampersand function will be the same as the one you will get by using CONCATENATE function. For example, =A1 & B1 returns the same value as=CONCATENATE(A1, B1)

To know more about the CONCATENATE/ ampersand function, you can refer to the following webpages:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/excel-help/concatenate-function-HP010342288.aspx

(Important: Below mentioned link is of a third-party website. We recommend you to update your security software thoroughly before clicking on the link.)

(Important: Below mentioned link applies to Excel 2007. Still, you can refer it to understand more about ampersand function.)

I just bought a new desktop that has office starter on it. I have office 2007 that i want to load but it is an "update" version. Will this recognize office starter as a registered microsoft...

Microsoft Office Starter is a new product launched by Microsoft that comes only in a version that is pre-installed on certain computers. There are no genuine licensed CD, DVD or download versions of this product. It should therefore actually be Microsoft Office Starter 2010 that you have pre-installed on your computer.

So the simple answer to your question is no. An Office 2007 Update will have no effect on an Office 2010 application. Also, an Office 2007 Upgrade application will probably not install anything at all on your computer unless of course you have genuine licensed versions of Office 2000 or Office 2003 already installed on it that are capable of being upgraded.

Microsoft Office Starter 2010 has a perpetual license (never expires), so it is not immediately obvious why you would feel the need to upgrade it, unless there is a particular Microsoft Office function that you need which is not included in Starter.

Office Starter replaces the various Trial versions of Office that used to come pre-installed on some computers. Office Starter is a reduced functionality version of Office including basic versions of Word and Excel. Neither PowerPoint nor Outlook are available in the Starter format. Word and Excel Starter can be used as they are for an indefinite period of time or can be unlocked to the functionality of various full versions of Office by buying and downloading an activation code from Microsoft. Starter can be used to open any Microsoft Word or Excel documents or spreadsheets and can also be used to perform basic editing of such documents and spreadsheets (a number of sophisticated tools and functions do not feature in Starter and are available only in the full versions of Microsoft Office).

If you do not want or cannot afford to upgrade Starter to a full-function version of Microsoft Office 2010, then a free full-function Office suite application called Open Office is available that is of similar quality to Microsoft Office and can also be used to open edit and manage Microsoft Office documents spreadsheets and databases. Open Office is available to download install and use totally free of charge (like other Open Source applications) from:

To hide zeros cell-by-cell use a Custom Number Format like 0.00;-0.00; where 0.00 is desired format for non zeros. Note the use of -0.00 for negatives.

To hide zeros on the Workbook level go to Tools>Options>View - Zero Values.

Dreamweaver CS3

Import Microsoft Office documents (Windows only) You can insert the full contents of a Microsoft Word or Excel document in a new or existing web page. When you import a Word or Excel document, Dreamweaver receives the converted HTML and inserts it into your web page. The file’s size, after Dreamweaver receives the converted HTML, must be less than 300K.
Instead of importing the entire contents of a file, you can also paste portions of a Word document and preserve the formatting.
Note: If you use Microsoft Office 97, you cannot import the contents of a Word or Excel document; you must insert a link to the document.
  1. Open the web page into which you want to insert the Word or Excel document.
  2. In Design view, do one of the following to select the file:
    • Drag the file from its current location to the page where you want the content to appear.
    • Select File > Import > Word Document or File > Import > Excel Document.
  3. In the Insert Document dialog box, browse to the file you want to add, select any of the formatting options from the Formatting pop-up menu at the bottom of the dialog box, and then click Open. Text Only Inserts unformatted text. If the original text is formatted, all formatting will be removed.
Text With Structure Inserts text that retains structure, but does not retain basic formatting. For example, you can paste text and retain the structure of paragraphs, lists, and tables, without retaining bold, italics, and other formatting.
Text With Structure Plus Basic Formatting Inserts both structured and simple HTML-formatted text (e.g., paragraphs and tables, as well as text formatted with the b, i, u, strong, em, hr, abbr, or acronym tag).
Text With Structure Plus Full Formatting Inserts text that retains all structure, HTML formatting, and CSS styles.
Clean Up Word Paragraph Spacing Eliminates extra space between paragraphs when you paste your text if you selected Text With Structure or Basic Formatting. The contents of the Word or Excel document appear in your page.
