Hi,
1. Make sure it's connect to "Audio Out" on your DirecTV box.
2. Yes, the blue light should be on while unit is on an received a signal.
3. Check a second set of audio cables, just to be sure.
4. Toggle the Auto On/Off button on the ZVOX remote.
5. Make sure you've turned up the volume via the ZVOX remote.
If all these fail, contact us at zvoxaudio.com.

Hooking sayyo tv to directv

Not sure if I understand what is happening here but if set on channel 4 the connection for the direct TV would have to be to the coax fitting on the rear of the set.

For the audio/video inputs on the rear or side it would have to be the same ones coming out of the direct TV box to one of the same but inputs on the rear--Audio/video are one connection and coax for channel four is a different one.

I have purchase an onkyo HT-RC230 receiver. I want to connect a Directv R16-500 DVR & RCA L32W22 TV. Directv satelite service is currently connected to the DVR and DVR is connected composit S ports of ...

This is a rather uncomplicated satellite receiver, and basically only has a left/right audio out.
You can hook these into any of the stereo type inputs on the HT-RC230.
This receiver is also the "wal-mart" brand of Onkyo (not their best stuff) - so I suggest you take the L/R audio out on the DVR and put it into ANY available (cd/tape/dvd) stereo input on the receiver.
You aren't going to get better sound out of any specific input.

Not able to scan stations

I don't understand why you would bother to scan channel when you have directv or dishnetwork???
directv or Dishnetwork required their units in order to watch any channel, which means:
A. Depending on your TV setting,if you use RF connection from your basic directv to the tv,you would have to leave the TV on Ch.3 or Ch.4.to view the rest of the channels, you have to change it from the directv or dishnetwork box. You are NOT able to scan the rest of the channels from the TV,bottom line!!
If you have comcast or your local cable provider, once you have activated, you could use the RF signal coming out from the wall plate straight to the tv and go to TV auto programming,it will auto scan the available channels for you.
Don't waste your time on directv.
If you are thinking about recording from your BASIC directv or dishnetwork box, you would connect SAT. signal from the wall plate to the directv box, then use composite video/audio output and connect straight to your VCR/DVD player under composite video/audio input. Now you could record the viewing channel to the VHS.
Good luck!
