You can download a manual for the Activa 145 here, buttonholing steps would probably be very similar for your model
http://www.bernina.com.au/webautor-data/888/0305295204_0303_a135-a145_EN.pdf

It says you sew one bar, then press the reverse button and the automatic function then sews the bar tacs, other side, bar tack and finishes.

Dose the bernina 140 do embroidery

The Bernina Patchwork 140 does not do embroidery from a file (either built-in or external). You can do some free-hand embroidery by lowering the feed dogs. Depress the feed dog position button on the right hand side of the machine. It's below the balance dial and between the foot control socket and the power cord socket.

I hope this helps. ManualsLib has the manual for the Bernina 140; it's a shared manual with the Activa 130 and 131.

I have a Bernina Patchwork 140. How do I change the needle to stop in the down position? The sewing manual is no help.

As far as I know, the Patchwork 140 doesn't have a needle stop up/down button. You'll need to use the hand wheel to bring the needle up or down, as needed. The Bernina machines that have a needle stop up/down button have this button below the LCD screen. (On those machines, it's usually the left-most button below the LCD.) I suspect the index giving a page number for the Needle Stop Up/Down button is a artifact of using the same index for multiple machines.

The manual for the Patchwork 140 is available at Manuals Lib here: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1002243/Bernina-Activa-131.html . The Bernina 135 has the needle stop up/down button. See https://www.bernina.com/en-US/Support-US/Machines/BERNINA-activa/BERNINA-activa-135 . The manual for this model is https://www.bernina.com/getdoc/90f75840-2b12-4f46-88f2-76f09e35d8d4/030529-52-04_0303_a135-a145_EN .

I hope this helps.

What is smart pedal foot control for Bernina? I have a Patchwork Edition 140 and needle stop down should be controlled by pedal according to shop. I don't understand.

The foot control you are talking about will activate the needle down function on your machine. You need to press down on your heel on the foot control. This was the precursor to the automatic needle up/down option that is found on newer sewing machines that will automatically stop with the needle in the down position.

What needle do i i need for a bernina patchwork 140 ?

The 130/705H needle system is standard across most domestic sewing machines so should be what your Bernina takes too.

My bernina patchwork 140 will not sew in reverse when I press the reverse button has the button gone bad the button hole won't sew ithe back stitch either?

Some machines will not do any of their automatic forwards and backwards movement type stitches in reverse, are you trying to reverse in straight stitch or a more complex stitch.

The Activa is a late model quality machine, do you have a Bernina dealer locally you could ring up and ask or take it to?

I can't remember how to sew a button hole....lost the manual . I don't remember what to "push" to get the machine to proceed through the "4 steps" of the programmed button hole.

I have a 180e, but cant put my hand on the manual tonight to clarify this issue for you.
From memory though, you need to go into the button hole button option, & look for stitch #60. The button sew application is automatic & its recommended that the #18 button foot be used.
As I said, that is from memory. Will check my manual asap & will clarify anything if needed, but I'm pretty sure thats the procedure, as I sewed buttons not that long ago. Hope this helps you.

Bernina Patchwork 140 handwheel is getting stiff to turn

A stiff handwheel can be a simple as a thread stuck in the raceway or as severe as a failed uppershaft bushing.

Using your instruction manual, perform the basic maintenance and see if that helps. If not, take it to a repair person for evaluation.
