If you are experiencing exactly the same problem with both turntables then the dirty contacts are probably not the problem.
You do not say what sort of amplifier you are playing the turntables through.
If your audio system / amplifier has a dedicated input for a record turntable (it will be marked PHONO) it may have a switch next to it - move the switch to the MAG (magnetic) position. This will solve your problem.
If it is a home audio system or even a disco amp with only an AUX (auxillary) input socket then you will need a PRE-AMPLIFIER to boost the signal from the cartridge to the right level to match the two together. Here is a link to the sort of thing you will need. http://www.richersounds.com/products/accessories/phono-pre-amps
Phono Pre-Amps vary enormously in price - I have the Vivanco and it works very well but it will only take one turntable so you would need two of them or a DJ's model with 2 separate channels.

Me again: the four little knobs I am referring to are the ones in the locking nut. Two of those four are 'stained' and I couldn't remove whatever it is.
Update:
I get good noise from one channel (the black cable) and no noise at all from the other one. When I take the red cable out from the connection to the amp/preamp (a home hi fi anyway) and kind of mess around with it and the connection, there is a loud hum. So there is 'something' there, but no sound.
