Sony Playstation 3 (40 GB) Console Logo

When I powered up my PS3 today. I had the dreaded "black screen". I googled problem and most answers were to turn the system off. Then plug in the Component cables (leave the HDMI) still pluggedin. Then hold the "stand by" button for 6 seconds and when you get the question "dectected an HDMI cable, would you like to switch to it" you say "yes". I then unplugged the component cables and got the black screen. Most answers on Google then said to switch out the HDMI cable with another. Well, I did. I tried two others. Still have the black screen. Now what? If I do a "system restore" and erase everything, will that fix the problem? If not, what do I do? Please help.

Wow, so many solutions, which one do you choose..

Ok, here is your answer:

Yes, plug in both HDMI and AV cables.

Press and hold the power button until the systems shuts off. (wait 2 seconds)

Press and hold the power button again until you here 3 beeps. Let go.

You should see, in either HDMI or AV, a screen that ask you to 'connect controller and press ps button.'

If you see this menu with AV and not HDMI, then you will have to use AV.

If you do not see this in either TV input, then this is what you have:

Then you have what is commonly known as the "Green light of Death."

It is when your system powers on and acts normally but no display. Your GPU (graphics chip) has cracked or become damaged and will need to be sent in to SONY. You can try a 3rd party technician, but this repair has a very very low success rate.

Thanks for the quick response Mike. I'll try that. By the way, last night I was able to see the screen while in "video 2" which is the Component AV connction. But I was not able to see it on "Video 7" which is my HDMI input. Does that mean my internal card for the HDMI port is fried?

  • Anonymous Jan 27, 2011

Yes, and it cannot be repaired by a 3rd party technician. But hey, I guess there is always someone better than you (I mean me). Have a good day.

Considering that you would have to send it to SONY, you will have to contact them directly for the correct pricing information: 1800 345 SONY.

How do i get my hdmi to work for my ps3 system

Note: How to reset video output settings
If you are attempting to change to an HDMI cable from a different video cable or if the video output settings do not match those required for the display in use, the screen may stay black. If the screen stays black for more than 30 seconds, you may need to reset the video output settings of the PS3.

To reset video output settings:

  1. Turn the PS3 system off by holding the Power button on the front of the console till you see the power light turn red.
  2. Then hold the power button on the front of the console for at least five seconds until you hear a second beep to turn the system on again. The video output settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution.

Minimum Requirements

  • PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system
  • SIXAXISTM wireless controller (and USB cable)
  • AC power cord
  • HDMI cable1 (sold separately)
  • TV or display monitor with HDMI port and capable of displaying picture in HD resolution
  • Updated system software installed on your PS3
Visit PS3 System Software Update to download and install the most recent version.
  • TV "Input" or "Video" channel for the HDMI port
You need to know the TV "Input" or "Video" channel for the HDMI port on your TV. For instance, if your TV has multiple "Input" or "Video" channels, (i.e., "Input 1", "Input 2", "Input 3", etc.), you will need to toggle through each "Input" channel on your TV until you find the correct channel that displays the HDMI picture. This is important to remember, especially if you do not see the HDMI picture after you connect the cable and configure the PS3 settings. Please refer to the TV instruction manual for more information.

Did you recently change televisions? If so with the PS3 off hold down the power button and keep it hold down until you hear some beeps and the console eventually powers back off. This will reset the video output settings. If you have not changed anything television wise, ensure all cables are connected correctly, if you have another video cable HDMI? you could try I would advise that as well.

MY PS3 WON'T LOAD ANY DISC! This just happened today, and all of my games are in good condition. I recently got the newest update of the PS3 firmware. All I get is a never ending loading circle of doom. D:...

no worries bud...gotchya covered...first off..if u cant access the ps3 main menu at all then u cant delete the update singularily..if u could access the main menu, just go to the item u updated...(i.e playstation home) and delete it and download and reinstall again...if not...then heres the fix...dont worry it wont erase anything, just corrupted data...which it sounds like u have...k....1. Start with having the system in standby (redlight is on)
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Press and hold the power button again and keep holding, it will beep as it turns on and then it will double beep. When you hear the double beeps immediately take your finger off the power button (if your system turns off before you get a double beep just try again and hold the button, it should double beep the 2nd time you try)
4. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
You will now have a screen with these options (I have attached a picture of this screen below)
1. Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
2. Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
CHOOSE THIS ONE 3.Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
4. Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
5. Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
6. System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT CHOOSE THE WRONG OPTION HERE OR YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA. The one that fixed my blu-ray drive is option 3: RESTORE FILE SYSTEM
I REPEAT CHOOSE RESTORE FILE SYSTEM hope it helps ya!
