My GTM 20 tip got unscrewed and the parts fell out. I put the parts together and then found out that both the car socket fuse and the GTM 20 fuse were busted. I replaced both fuses. The car socket works just fine but the GTM 20 fuse get burnt the moment I plug it in, even before the light goes on. I tried two new fuses in two different cars with the same result. My question: can GTM20 be repaired or should I get a new GPS charger?

The GTM 20 can be repaired. It's likely that either you're not using the correct fuse or there's a short circuit. The short circuit would be caused by the metal tip, spring or fuse touching the outer part of the plug. There's a repair kit available from http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-replacement-parts-for-gtm2x.html

Power cord light does not come on and garmin does not charge. Unit was ust bought in May 2009.

make sure the socket is working that your plugging the charger in to, like a cell phone. if you verified that the car socket is good, there should be a fuse in the tip of the car charger where it goes in the car socket....just unscrew the tip off...if there is no tip on it, its probably fell off and might be in the car socket.

if the car socket does not power anything else up, locate the fuse in the fuse panel of the car an check the fuse.

Garmin gtm 20 lost tip and spring can i get replacement parts

The garmin.com/parts won't get it. You'll have to call the 1-800-800-1020 number and press the number for the automotive service option. After that, you'll have to wait another 30min ( I waited 90 min - home waiting on the cable man), then you'll finally get to a person who will take all of 60 seconds to place the GTM-20 tip kit on order for you. The service person said that it was a common problem, but don't know why it's not on the Garmin site to order on line. Total parts and shipping $11.50. Hope this helps.

METAL TIP CAME OFF THE GTM20 AND WONT WORK SO GARMIN SENT A FUSE AND REPLACEMENT PARTS WITH NO INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO FIX IT.

1. Hold the "receiver" with the open end up.
2. Insert the small spring in the opening.
3. Insert the fuse in the opening.
4. Place the metal ring atop and around the opening with the "sharp" edge of the ring down and the smooth surgace of the ring up. The fuse should now be protruding thru the metal ring.
5. Place the chrome "tip/cap" atop the fuse end.
6. Place the black plastic part over the chrome "tip/cap" with the black plastic part's threads going toward the receiver opening and push the black plastic part's threaded end through the opening in the metal ring and into the receiver opening and screw it in fairly tightly.
7. The chrome "tip/cap" should now protrude through the end of the black plastic part and everything should now be securely held in its proper place.
8. You should now be able to press your finger down on the "tip/cap" and it should depress slightly and then spring back when you release it. If that works you should be able to plug it in to the car's cigaraette lighter opening and connect your Garmin GPS.
9. Last but not least: EVERY time you remove the GTM 20 from the cigarette lighter opening you should check to make sure that the black plastic part with the threaded ends (the part that's holding everything in it's proper place) has not loosened. If you don't check this religiously you are likely to end up losing one or more of the parts I've just discussed.
DO NOT be tempted to glue that part in place as the fuse may blow someday which will require you to replace the fuse.

Garmin nuvi / gtm 20 charger not working. I think it's a blown fuse. How to replace fuse?

If yours has a plastic tip at the silver metal contact, just unscrew the plastic part between the silver ring and the silver tip. Counter clockwise! Fuse should fall out but take cautions not to lose the silver tip part. I you do it can be found at www.gpsnstuff.com
