One thing that I have had good results with on controling mold and bacterial build up is to add a couple of ounces of chlorine bleach every month. You can purchase commercial products to do the same thing at most hvac supply stores. They do smell much better but are not cheap. Hope this helps you. Thanks

How to fix a dehumidifier

Hi R.
Remove the cover first, then use a damp cloth to clean the fan blades and the area around the motor. Put two teaspoons of baking soda in the dehumidifier's tank to prevent future mildew and mold odors. In the future, empty the dehumidifierregularly so that it doesn't have time to grow mold or bacteria.16 Jan 2017

Motor burn out

I think so. I believe the motor failed while there was water in the bucket. Over time the mold started growing, it was consuming the dirt on the inside of the bucket and utilizing the water contained therein.

Wondering how to prepare my dehumidifier for winter. I only need to run it during the summer months when my ac is going. does it need to be bleached out? I dont want mold growing in it.

It's really no need to "bleach it out", so much as it is to clean it thoroughly (i.e. the air intake filter, the bucket and the exterior of the cabinet). Once it is clean & dry place a large plastic bag over it and store it in an upright position, in an area that does not go below 32 degrees F.

Cleaning with warm water and mild dish washing liquid is what is recommended by most manufacturers.

I hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

I have a HD456E/HD656E dehumidifier that has failed. It is plugged in; however, when the master on/off switch is depressed either the unit will not power on or if it does power on (with compresser...

It could be what you say or it could be that the humidification extraction level is set too High. Try lowering the extraction percentage to 32 - 35%.

If that doesn't help and you'd like to order replacement control board/panel. Call Haier Parts and Technical Support 877-337-3639. But, you may find it cheaper to replace the unit, then repair it.

Kenmore dehumidifier M/N 580.53650200 only runs for about 1 minute, then stops. Dehumidifying level is set to minimum (40) and it's damp in the basement so I know the air is not too dry. The fan works, the...

Well to knowledge the problem 40 percent is dry. means your basement is great. humidity should be 30/50 percent 50 grows mold. also if it runs for a min the auot shut off is activating. check this first.

Where to hook up drain hose

On the bucket there should be a cap. If you remove it your hose can attach to it. Run the hose top a drain. If possible, raise the dehumidifier so the water drains properly. From time to time, pour a little bit of bleach into the hose to keep mold away.

Should I clean or replace the air filter?

You can wash the filter with water, no problem. However, I would recommend replacing the filter every 3 to 4 months depending on how much you use the dehumidifier. The exposure to constant moisture will cause the filter to grow mold over time.
