I was storing some extension numbers and spead dial numbers and I must have done something wrong as anytime I pick up handset to make a call a 'reorder tone' message comes up on the display- this is before I press any key. What can I do to sort it out?

So don't pick up the handset :-)

There are some line preference and pickup dial programs that just happen to sit in PROGRAM 1x. My guess is that you have assigned an empty or invalid pickup dial code to the phone.

Try this first. Press PROGRAM and dial 12 ENTER. Is the Hot Line mode ON? If it is, press SEL and ENTER. Wow. That was easy :-)

Didn't work? Let's go for Preferred Line Outgoing next. Dial PROGRAM 19 and 3 ENTER. That makes the intercom prime (0 is none, 1 is idle line 2 (xx) is a specific line).

If you tried both of these, and still no joy, then it's time to reset the phone. The problem with that is you have to dial the code IMMEDIATELY as you're picking up the handset. Good luck with that. The reset code is 79# or 790.

Need to change extension numbers

Guessing you mean add or change extension numbers under the buttons, since you don't "add" or change extension numbers on the phone. From your set, press program dial 99 and the button you want to program. then , dial 1+ ext number and press STORE.

Do that for all the buttons you want to change then pick up the handset and drop it back down to exit programming.

Panasonic KX-T7420. There are several of these phones in our office, I would like to know how to reset all extension numbers at each phone and create new ones.

Reset? How about you just program new ones over the old? I'm guessing you mean intercom DSS buttons, so you dial PROGRAM 99, press the button and dial 1+ the new extension STORE. Keep doing that to all the buttons you want to program and then pick up the handset and drop it back down again when you're done.

I need to know how to program the numbers into the speed dial option. My mother's phone is a table set with large numbers #29267A ... close enough?

Before you store a telephone number in memory, make sure the dialing mode is
correctly set for the type of service you have. The default dialing mode is tone
(touch-tone), so if you have pulse (rotary) service, you must first change the dialing
mode. See “To Set the Dial Mode.” The following buttons can be stored into any
memory location: 0-9.
STORING FREQUENTLY CALLED NUMBERS
1. Pick up the handset.
2.Press the store button.
3. Push the desired memory location button.
4. Press the store button.
5.Use the handset number keys to enter the telephone number (up to 16-digits)
and press the store button.
6.Hang up the handset.
NOTE: If you make a mistake, use the delete button to delete wrong digits.
CHANGING A STORED NUMBER
Repeat the storage sequence above. The new number replaces the old number at
the memory location.
ERASING A STORED NUMBER
1. Pick up the handset.
2.Press the store button.
3.Press the memory location (0-9) to be erased.
4.Press delete for three seconds until the number in the display is erased.
5.Hang up the handset.
DIALING FREQUENTLY CALLED NUMBERS
1. Pick up the handset and press the mem button.
2. Press 0-9 for the memory location. The number dials automatically.
OR
1. Pick up the handset and press the dial button.
2. Press the review button for the desired memory location.
3. Press the dial button to dial the number.
OR
1. Press dial button while the handset is still in the cradle.
2. Press the review button for the desired memory location, lift the handset and the
number dials automatically.

How can i program the extensions directly on the phone, without having to dial them.

It depends on how many lighted spare buttons you have. in a TA type system, you press PROGRAM, press a spare button, and dial 1+ the extension you want to dial and STORE. If you just want a speed dial to an extension, you can program them on the right side by PROGRAM, button, ext, and STORE.

With the lights, you can monitor the progress of the extension users. It's called DSS (direct station selection) in the manuals.

If you have a TA or lower system, you have to pick up the handset or press SP PHONE and make sure you're on the intercom, then press the buttons. In a TAW or greater, you can just press the button and pick up the handset or the SP PHONE will go on automatically.
