I have a HP PSC 1410 and i have recently bought a brand new ink catridge. Every time i print however the ink is faded and streaky it is difficult to even read what is on the paper how do i stop this?

It must be your ruined catridge. Some times the wire connections are burned at the side of the catridge and you must thaw away it and buy a new color catridge.
Sounds like the printer thinks the cartridge is empty.
Old PSC units had a 3 cartridge memory - you kept 3 cartridges and cycled them to trick the printer into thinking it had just received a brand new cartridge, rather than a refilled one.
try install catridge one by one see whether it is accepting or not. just install black catridge and see if you not getting any error that mean your balck catridge is ok may be problem with colour catridge it may me becoz of dry ink or dust in catridge nozle try to clean the catridge by tissue paper and see.
