I installed the cd and did the updates but when I connect my P2, I get a little window from the task bar saying that my device driver failed. I run Vista as an OP. I had the same problem when I tried another brand mp3 and ended up returning it when no one could help me. The software looks like it works and the P2 works but I can't et them together. Very frustrating.
force the device driver to look at C:\Program Files\Zune\Drivers\Zune\Zune.inf
That should do the trick
Hi there i once had that problem and in order to repair i had to boot up into the bios and modify the setting enable ultra high usb drive support i clicked it then it hasnt given me a problem since ok try that
Windows has probably installed an incorrect driver for the player. Go into Device Manager (start > settings > control panel > device manager)
Look for the driver for the mp3 player, it will probably have a yellow exclamation mark on it, right click it and click "uninstall", confirm.
Now click the button on the device manager that looks like a screen with a magnifying glass to "scan for hardware changes" The device should pick up and ask you what driver to use, click "browse my computer for driver software" and "let me choose my own device driver" ,browse to the location of the correct Vista driver.
Try connecting any other usb device eg.usb mouse, usb pan drive...
make sheer usb port are working fine.
I'm guessing you're try for the Zune now, Try these steps:
You may want to try #8 first.
1. Update the Zune software on the computer. To do this, click settings, click software, click GENERAL, and then click CHECK FOR UPDATES.
If the issue is still not resolved, go to the next step.
2. Restart the Zune device.
To do this, follow these steps: a. Set the Hold switch to the unlocked position.
b. Press and hold the Back button as you press the top of the Zune pad.
When the Zune device begins to restart, release the buttons.
If the issue is still not resolved, go to the next step.
3. Disconnect the Zune device from the computer, restart the computer, and then reconnect the Zune device.
If the issue is still not resolved, go to the next step.
4. Connect the Zune device to a different USB port on the computer. Use a USB port on the back of the computer. Do not use a USB hub.
If the issue is still not resolved, go to the next step.
5. When you connect the Zune Sync Cable to the connector port of the Zune device, make sure that both ends of the sync cable click into position. Additionally, make sure that the sync cable is not connected to the device at an angle.
6. Connect only one Zune device at a time. If you already have a Zune device connected to the computer, any other Zune that you try to connect will not be detected by the Zune software. Disconnect any additional Zune devices, and then try to connect again.
If the issue is still not resolved, go to the next step.
7. If a full-screen battery image appears when you connect the device to the computer, you must let the device charge for several minutes before the device will start and be detected by the computer.
For more information about how to charge a Zune device, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

b. Click Device Manager. Zune should be listed under Portable Devices.
Note If the device was installed incorrectly, Zune may be listed together with a yellow exclamation mark (!). Or, it may be listed under Other devices as USB Device.

FixYa for all your troubleshooting needs.
Well it is not that difficult, in Vista, if you do not install drivers as administrator , you get : "the device driver failed to install".
Run the driver software as administrator that's all
to run a program as administrator in Vista, locate the program file (explore CD) click right button of mouse on file, and chose 'run as administrator'.
Accept the solution if this fixes it.
On Vista you have a system called |UAC, UAC means User access control. Normally UAC is active, and will prevent applications from gaining full access to the system.
When you install a driver file, the installer need full access to the system, to get this you need to bypass UAC.
Insert driver cd in.
Open computer, then right click on cd and chose open.
locate install file on cd (or on a folder if you downloaded the driver)
Click right button of mouse on driver install folder.
Chose 'run as administrator' from drop down menu.
Press allow each time Windows ask you if to allow the installer to perform operation.
Important. Start driver install with device NOT CONNECTED to usb on computer, connect the P2 only when required by installation program, or install will fail.
Now you should be able to fix it, if you still get troubles is because you connected P2 before installing drivers, and Vista installed his own driver that usually does not work. To fix this do a system restore to an early date.
How does that guy use to say?
Ah yes....
"Don't forget to rate the solution"
Well you do not need an ATI software, the guy did not even know what he was talking about.
ATi Catylist is a control software for ATI video card, it is totally unrelated, and experts here should stop posting complete rubbish like this!
You have a driver or a usb problem.
Try the following it should work:
1 unplug computer cord from power outlet (unplug, turning off is not enough), and remove batteries from MP3 to reset everything.
2 Keep mp3 unplugged from computer
3 Go to installed devices in control panel and remove the mp3 if present.
4 Reinstall drivers as suggested above. Use install as administrator. Also ensure MP3 is NOT connected while installing.
If the above did not work do system restore to 30 days ago and repeat procedure.
If nothing works last resort reinstall Vista, but the above should work.
then you are free to install Ati Catalist on your "extraditable harddrives" or to follow other meaningless instructions.

There's a possibility that Windows vista doesn't support your player that's why it cannot install a driver for it even as a USB device, If you want you can go to device manager and look for USB device or a USB root hub there that has a exclamation mark and update teh driver of it and let windows vista look for the driver for that ...
Hope that helps..........
So you got a new MP4 and still have teh same probelm try doing this:
To solve this, plug in your hardware and wait for the prompt to search for drivers.
If no drivers are found, click on the "advanced" option of locating the drivers manually.
If you dont get an option of browsing manually go to Control Panel > Device Manager and Find your hardware thats not installed. Right click on it and select Update Driver Software.
You get asked to Browse your computer, or you can enter a file location. Simply place the following in, or find the folder on your computer
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository
Click next and Windows searches that folder... and finds your drivers... installs them and sorts it all out.
Hope that fix it...

Hello crys-m,
If you go to MyComputer, and look under "extraditable harddrives"
can you see your MP3 connected?
Pls check your computer, and let me know in order for me to fully help you.
crys-m,
The tab can also be named "devices with removable storage" or "other".
My point is, go to MyComputer, and see if you can find your MP3's harddrive listed there.
Crys-M, it will also be helpfull if you answer me these questions: Have your computer detected it before? Is that USB port working? Have you tested your MP3 on another computer?
Hello crys-m
Is your issue solved now, or is there something else in witch we can help you?
Good luck,
Dahaka

I found the service pack 1 update and loaded it. I checked and I already have media player 11. Still get the message that 'Installing device driver software'and then my 'device driver software was not sucessfully installed'.
I have windows media player 11 and I downloaded the SP1 for vista. Still a no go. I went to samsung's website and downloaded the exact driver for my P2 mp3 player and same results. Should I just uninstall everything and reinstall from the web site? I'll try that tonight. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Tried unistalling everything. Reinstalled from the website without update and with update. computer still does not detect the p2.I tried installing it on my daughters computer and it works. First time, no problems.
Here I am again. I have tried everything suggested, I also checked with the geek squad, I have updated, reinstalled everything, updated again. I returned the P2, bought a Zune gen 2 80 gig. Spent 9.99 for fixya, spent 49.95 for the geek squad, spent another 100 for the new mp3.STILL DOESN"T WORK! same error message. "the device driver failed to install" everything works independently untill I connect. Out of money.
