To the much of my dissmay , my neighbor gave me his 50v500 hitachi tv. and it has the faint dreaded cntr blue aura syndrome. as I am quite aware of this light engine issuses and wonder if I can repair or wipe off this blue aura in this light engine or is it a hightech ic and not just a resistor? " whishfull thinking"

I am having the same problem with my 50v500 as well. Please let me know if you find a solution.

Symptom: Dead, F901 is open.
Cause: Shorted D902 on the power supply board.

Pretty much, surfed the internet, and found out that the common problem is the light engine, not the lamp. E-mailed Hitachi and also spoke with a service tech, who actually told me, he has replaced quite a few light engines for Hitachi 50" LCD TV'S. Also, there is a lawsuit against Hitachi regarding the defective light engines. But yet they are still selling tv's without admitting to the defect. Having my tv checked out through the service tech, and then notify Hitachi again for the upteenth time.

I am not expert but before you go to a lot of trouble, read all of the post on the infamous "red cloud", "red blob" and "blue streaking". In evey case, it appeared that the light engine was the problem. We just had our light engine replaced and the TV looks perfect. We dealt only with Hitachis Customer Relations Department 800-654-7013. You will have to have a certified tech come out and diagnos the problem. Hitachi will then call and verify, with the dealer, that the problem is a defective light engine and will send out a brand new one.

We were told the part cost around $1500 (Hitachi covers that) however, they will ask you to pay for the install. Our install cost $400. Worth is to us as we paid $3600 for this set 3+ years ago and we have loved this TV. When you first call Hitchi, they will act like they've never heard of this problem but they will give you names of certified techs in your area. Once the tech confirms that it's the light engine, Hitachi will own up to the problem and send out the part.

You really should only deal with Customer Relations ( I listed their 800 number above as you will be chasing your tail so to speak with their regular customer service department. Good Luck!
