Peter,
You do not activate Safe Mode. You run the computer/laptop in Safe Mode by pressing F8 at bootup before the Windows logo comes up. You will be taken to a B&W Menu screen. One of the choices would be Safe Mode. Select that. It is basically to troubleshoot when you are in trouble and Windows is misbehaving. You can change the settings in Safe Mode.
There are other modes too. Try them out for you knowledge. When you try the DOS Prompt option, to come out of the DOS Prompt mode you must type exit and press enter.

If you don't have documents, pictures, etc on the hard drive that you need to backup, try running system recovery by doing the following (not sure if this works on the version with a solid state drive): WARNING: This will format your hard drive and return your netbook to the condition it was in from the manufacturer.
1. Turn on the computer
2. Press and hold Alt + F10
3. Click on Restore System to Factory Default
4. Ensure the netbook is plugged into AC power instead of running off the battery and click OK

your laptop has been turned off without shutting down. all your laptops registries are probably messed up. the easiest way to do is to reformat your computer or restore it to factory settings. unless you have some important files that you cant afford to lose.

If you have the option of going to a command prompt (on the choose how to start "text" screen), do it, and type at the C:> fdisk /mbr then press the ENTER key. This may fix things. Also, try removing the battery when the computer is off, wait about a minute, then replace it and start computer. This actually helps sometimes.
