Canon ZR600 Mini DV Digital Camcorder Logo

The camera is not showing a picture on the camcorder screen or tv when trying to play in play mode. It ate a tape when I tried to play back a video. I took out the tape, fixed the tape and then tried a different tape. The tape worked on the camcorder screen and the tv so I tried the first tape again and only a blue screen showed. So I again tried the tape that had worked and now it will not work. I tried a couple other tapes with recorded material and none of them will work. The camcorder screen shows that the tape is playing and it sounds like its playing, fast forwarding and rewinding. The camcorder screen shows the minutes remaining on each of the different tapes and I checked to make sure that the tapes really are moving forward and backward. If I put the camcorder in record mode it shows the picture that I am trying to take and says that it is recording but I do not know if it is really working because the play back mode will not work. Any ideas?

This is most likely caused by a damaged or misaligned video drum and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

When recording it shows that it is recording but we can't see anything. If we play back what we think we might have recorded we can only hear the sound but not see anything.

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot this issue.

IMPORTANT: If additional model-specific instructions are needed to perform any of the steps below, refer to the operating instructions of the camcorder. The instruction manual is available in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony eSupport Web site.
  1. Ensure a fully-charged battery is inserted or connect the AC power adapter.
  2. Turn the camera on to the VTR or PLAYBACK mode.
  3. Insert a cassette tape with recorded video into the camcorder.
  4. Ensure the cassette tape is rewound to the beginning of the video recording.
  5. Begin playing the cassette tape.
  6. If your camcorder has an LCD screen, try adjusting the brightness or contrast.
  7. If there is still no picture on the LCD or viewfinder, reset the camcorder to factory specifications
