I am having a problem troubleshooting a Dell 2335dn, the scanner will preview, but not scan and send the acquired image to a software called Dentrix, used by dental staff. Dell and the Dentrix support were of no help. I have updated to the latest Dell drivers, and tried various configurations, to no avail. Please offer any advice, would be highly appreciated. The specific need is to scan multiple images, using custom saved settings profiles (which means the WIA drivers are not acceptable for this application), and have scanned images send to the dentrix software. make sure your scanner is working properly and the software has been already installed to the server or computer to access the scanner. this steps can help you to operate the scanner.1. connect the scanner to your PC, mostly scanner now is using USB cable 2. and then turn ON your scanner, place your material to be scanned like you were using photo copier 3.press the scan button to acquire the image 4. then preview the scan, the scanner software should display a preview on your computer screen 5. and now select the scan area in the scanner software 6.next set other options for example set the the color or the resolution of the document 7. then scan the image and save it into your disk make as your new folder. after you save you can now send this document.

Scanning will work as separate plug in, when you request to acquire image from scanner from a standard image editor it will bring the task. Would you mind to provide your operating system and the programs that you are using for image editing so I can provide steps to scan.

Place the document or image into the scanner for scanning. A scanner with a paper feeder will only receive flat papers and photographs, but a flatbed scanner opens to accommodate books, fabrics and leaves along with flat papers. There is even a attachment for feeding photo slides into flatbed scanners.

Step 2 Start the scanning software. If the scanner does not engage the software automatically, press the "start" or "scan" button, or click the scanner icon on the computer screen to initialize the software.

Step 3 Activate the scan. Click the "file" menu and select "acquire," "import," or another practical choice that applies.

Step 4 Preview the item to be scanned. Most scanners have a preview option. This will show the scan area inside dotted lines. The lines can be moved with the mouse to relocate, enlarge or crop the scanning area.

Step 5 Set the resolution for images by number of dots per inch (dpi). For computer screen viewing, 100 dpi should suffice. Use 200 to 300 dpi for items to be printed.

Step 6 Use the appropriate setting for scanning black and white text. If the scanner does not show a preset for text, use "line art" or "black and white" at 300 dpi. Then use the optical character recognition (OCR) program to convert the image of the text into a file for word processi

Canon and other Scanners have both hardware and software buttons to scan documents and photographs.
Scanning with a computer is done with a destination in mind. So the buttons and the software are associated with destinations.
Typical destinations are File, email, Application, and print.
In a simple scan process for copy or print, the item is placed face down on the scanner, then the print button is pressed on the front of the scanner.
The software for the scanner pops up on the screen and the scanner moves the imaging light across the scanner under the glass, reading the item on the scanner. The software sends the image to the default printer and it prints a copy.

You will need to setup your preferences in the software so that a photograph is scanned properly and a newspaper article is scanned to come out clear black and white.
Documents are best saved as PDF files and photographs as TIFF files.
The software will have an expert mode where you can change all the settings and a beginner mode where you let the software decide.
Canon has a great document for your scanner. If it is not on the disk, here is the link. It is called CanoScan 4200F Scanning Guide. I think it will help you to use the scanner for any task.

If you have loaded the software for the printer/scanner.
Go to your HP director Icon and start this program.
you should see your Scanner / printer listed under Select device.

You can place a document/picture in the document feeder on top.
OR you can place the document / picture directly on the glass.
(Lift the hinged lid to reveal the scanner glass)
Don't worry the document feeder uses a different scan wand.
Now document / picture in place select the Scan document or Scan picture icon from the HP director. Depending on which type of document you have placed in / on the scanner.

Scanner should warm up then scan presenting you with a preview image. From here you can decide what and where to go.

You are not limited to just the HP director.
Other applications can use the twain source to activate your scanner software. This will transfer the scan to your application.
Irfanview is a prime example. Image viewer that will let you "Acquire" and image from you scanner. Be sure to select the twain source.

1. Connect a compatible scanner to your computer. A list of compatible scanners is available in technical document 107203 "Mac OS X 10.2: Scanners Compatible With Image Capture "

2. Install any necessary software drivers that came with the scanner.

Note: Not all scanners require the installation of additional software drivers.

3. Turn on the scanner.

4. Press the scan button on the scanner. See the documentation that came with the scanner for specific instructions. Image Capture opens automatically and a preview scan appears.

5. Select the area of the image you want to scan.

6. Click Options in the toolbar to adjust settings specific to your scanner.

7. Adjust any settings in the drawer that appears.

8. Click Scan.

The scanned image is saved in your Pictures folder in your home directory and opened in Preview.

Note: These are the default options. They can be changed in the Image Capture toolbar.

Try setting up the scanner in the scanners and camera control panel.... more than likely you are just hitting the scan button on the printer and it is using the defaults on the printer's installed software and is automatically sending it to your images folder. Maybe some clarification on exactly what you want to do?

If you have office, open microsoft document imaging and acquire the file that way ( acquire scan, and then cut and paste into word)

This means that you have not set up any users in the address book in the printer.

Copy is simple, it will scan the document and print out a copy of the scanned image.

Scan however, is trying to make and store an image file of the scan, but it needs to know WHERE you want to scan it to. The printer does not know where to send the stored image unless you create a storage location for it. This is done with the address book that is stored on the printer.

The material below is how to set up the scanner settings of the printer.

Printer Settings Utility Using the Printer Settings Utility window, you can set up the fax system data options, and create and edit Phonebook entries from your computer. You can also configure the destination launches when you access Scan and then PC.
When you install the Dell software, the Printer Settings Utility is automatically installed.

To open the Printer Settings Utility:

1. Click Start Programs DELL DELL Printers DELL Laser MFP 1815 Printer Settings Utility.
   

The Printer Settings Utility window opens.

1. The Printer Settings Utility window provides several features; Directory (Phone Book, Address Book), Fax Setting (Fax Cover Sheet), and Scan (Destination, Resolution, Scan Color, Show Preview).
   

The Scan Section The Destination Section To configure the operator panel display scan destination list that appears when you access Scan and then PC, click Destination and the Setting button. Using the destination list, you can select a software program that an image can be scanned to.

Try scanning from the image software you are using, not from the front panel buttons. Go to the TWAIN options and make sure your scanner is selected, then go to Acquire and the scanner software will start. Scan from there without using the scanner front panel.
