Dropped my sony digital DSC-W370 14.1 and the lens would not close. Have taken it to camera repair shops but they want to charge more than I payed for camera. Would like to know if I can try to close lens without paying a fortune. Lens not broken just a little dent on cover.

The lens error is due to failure of the lens control system. You can remove battery and card replace battery and while switching on tap the lens hood on your hands so as to disengage any dirt or mechanism being struck.
Use some air to blow between the lens to dislodge any sand particles struck inside. If none of these works then you can think of taking consensus with the service center on a reasonable estimate as some of the costs are high and hence they charge more.If the get estimate is high then you decide to scrap and go for a new model.Since some of the spares are available only with Sony service, this must be thought of, as you do not have to run around for spares.
However if the camera works without the lens shutting try and use it without any repair as Sony would have estimated for lens mechanism assembly

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.
Pay particular attention to Fix #1 first (in other words, how old are your batteries?).

The camera was dropped with the lens open. Now it

Bad news - there is no DIY fix for lens damage. The drop likely damaged the lens tube (housing) or jarred the zoom mechanism off of its track. If you attempt to fix it yourself you are likely to worsen the damage, so the camera will need professional repair.

Zoom lense 'Slanted'

The parts (gears) are manufactured in plastics so once damaged it is very difficult to rebuild. Sony does not sell gears but complete lens assy. so best way is to find out what Sony charges for the repair. At www.camerarepairjapan.com the rebuilt of zoom repair was around $120 with 3 months warranty. Good luck. James

Problem in Sony DSC T20

Call sony to see what they can do. Other than that their isnt many repair shops that are much less than what they quoted you. Or if you are good with mechanics it isnt hard to change the motor. Just purchase the exact same camera, a broken one with a different problem, off ebay or something similar and exactly how you take the motor out of the parts camera is how you would with yours.

Sony Cybershot dsc-p73 dropped

I also dropped this camera from waist high and the lens was stuck out and would not retract or let me do anything. I ended up having it sent to Sony to replace the lens and it cost me $200. I paid $300 for the camera to begin with but to me this was the BEST camera I'd ever had and was worth it. Before repairing it, I bought a new Sony Cybershot DSC-W80 since the original one I had dropped was no longer available. I was NOT pleased with the quality of the new camera at all and it was supposed to be better than the one I dropped. That's when I decided it was worth repairing the broken one and worth the cost.

Camera lens problem

Im confused, will you pay the lens assy? or they will replace the lens assy free of charge cause its warranty? In my opinion, if all the functions are working, shooting, zooming, flash, playback. just keep the camera, if they will replace the lens assy free of charge, fine. If charge to you, and it will free you from doubts(security) and your willing to pay it. have it replaced. But as I said, if its still working, just free your worry, anyway its warranty, whenever it will break, bring it to service ctr, just say my camera doesnt work. thanks
