Rewinds unexpectedly during capture

To transfer the recordings from your Samsung SC D353 Mini DV tape to your computer, you'll need to follow these steps:

1. Connect the camcorder to your computer: Use a FireWire (also called IEEE 1394) cable to connect your Samsung SC D353 Mini DV camcorder to your computer. Most computers have a FireWire port, but if yours doesn't, you can purchase a FireWire adapter card.
2. Turn on the camcorder: Turn on your Samsung camcorder and set it to VCR mode.
3. Open the video capture software: On your computer, open the video capture software that came with your operating system (e.g. Windows Movie Maker, iMovie on Mac) or a third-party video capture software (e.g. Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro) that supports Mini DV tape.
4. Start recording: In the video capture software, select the option to capture video from a DV device. Click the Record button in the software and then press Play on the camcorder to begin playing the Mini DV tape. The video should be captured and recorded onto your computer.
5. Save the video: Once the video has been captured, you can edit it if necessary and then save it to your computer in the desired format.

Note: If you do not have the original video capture software, it is recommended that you search and download compatible software before beginning the transfer process. Additionally, make sure your computer has enough storage to store the transferred files.

You'll need a software able to capture and edit video. Your footage is on tape, right? First, you must have a firewire port on your pc, with the cam properly connected to. Then, all you have to do is make use of a program like Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, or even the Windows Movie Makes, and find the capture window/mode/whatever, which will show you a console with play-pause-stop-rew-ff-rec buttons and a little monitor, to see where on the tape you are. Once on the capture console, you'll rewind the tape to the beginning of your footage and press rec ON THE CONSOLE, not on the camera. The software should ask you for a place to save the file and that's all.

AFTERWARDS WHEN U WILL ATTACH UR HANDYCAM WITH YOUR CAPTURING CARD YOUR CAMCORDER WILL BE DETECTED AUTOMATICALLY & THE WINDOW WILL OPEN & WILL ASK YOU THROUGH WHICH SOFTWARE YOU WANT TO CAPTURE THEN SELECT ADOBE PREMIERE THEN OPEN ADOBE PREMIERE GO TO FILE MENU & THEN SELECT CAPTURE THEN U CAN PLAY , REWIND OR FORWARD TOTAL FULL CONTROLL OF CAMCORDER WITH SOFTWARE ,TO CAPTURE CLICK RED BUTTON,IT WILL START UR CAPTURING,GIVE THE FILE NAME & DESTINATION WHERE U WANT TO SAVE THE FILE THEN START CAPTURING.

Unfortunately, the outlook is grim. If you duped the tape and the dropouts still appear, the anomalies are regrettably on the master itself, or the DSR11 is malfunctioning.
To be sure, try the following: View the master tape on a different deck, if possible. If glitches vanish, problem solved. Connect the AV/RCA out to the input on whatever digital deck you're using, and capture as usual with FCP. (If you need assistance with this step, I'll be happy to walk you through or send you in the right direction) Optimally, for a Hi8 tape, you would capture using DV 60i settings. 
If glitches still appear, try capturing audio and video in two separate occurrences, I.E. One capture for video only, and a second capture for audio only. Sync in final cut.
If that doesn't work, your other option is to send the tape out to a post production house/lab, and see if they can do it -  but if you've tried everything else and resorted to this option, the chances are slim that much can be done - Hi8 tapes are notoriously difficult to recover. Hi. I do know how to do that. You need some software that's capable of controlling the camera such as Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, or something like that. I believe Microsoft Movie Maker will do it and so will Roxio Media Creator which is the package they sell that burns CDs and DVDs as well. It's a whole media center.

The camera has the capability of being controlled through the firewire port on the front. You get a cable for the firewire port on the camera (firewire mini 4 pin) that goes to the computer (firewire 4 pin standard size). If you have an older computer with no firewire and it does have a PCMCIA card slot sometimes called a PC slot, or express card slot ... you can buy cards that will give it firewire ports.
You MUST have firewire to do this. The newer machines like the Acer Aspire One or any of the netbooks don't have any way to add firewire although the CPU is fast enough for video work. I capture on my old computer with firewire, and save the video to an external hard drive and edit on the netbook. Anyhow, I'm getting sidetracked!

Open your editing program and have it do a movie capture. The capture window will have buttons that look like the ones on the camera for fast forward, reverse, play, stop, etc. plus a couple for single frame reverse and forward which is useful for editing. It will also have a record button on the software. Play the tape and just as you start it, hit record. It should capture and you'll see a little data window on some software showing the frames captured and dropped during capture. That's about all there is to it. Editing is a bit trickier and I'm still learning alot of it. You can get older copies of Premiere online from a number of different sites. It's my personal favorite. It does more ... but the movie making software Microsoft provides with Windows XP and above will perform the capture perfectly well. Good luck with it.

Many HDV cameras and decks are able to play and record DV as well as the higher-resolution HDV format. Additionally, many of these HDV devices will attempt to automatically change their settings to match the format of the tape that it's playing. Here are some tips for using these types of devices with Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express.
Tip: Make explicit settings on your HDV device. Instead of using an "Auto" setting, make your own settings on your HDV device to keep the communication going between it and Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express. This also helps Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express keep things running smoothly with HDV devices that handle both DV-NTSC and DV-PAL.
For example, say you're using an HDV deck to capture footage from a tape that was recorded as DV-NTSC. Before capturing in Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express, make sure that you set the deck to DV mode specifically—don't rely on Auto mode. With some devices, you may need to disconnect it from FireWire to change the mode.
For a common capture workflow, this sequence of steps can provide the best results:

1. Quit Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express if it's open.
2. Insert your tape into your HDV deck or camcorder.
3. Use the device's menus to set it to match the format that's recorded on the tape.
4. Connect your HDV device to your computer with a FireWire cable.
5. Open Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express.
6. Choose an Easy Setup for DV or HDV (whichever matches the format recorded on your tape).
7. Proceed to Log and Capture.

Tip: Quit Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express before changing modes. It's generally a good idea to quit Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express before you change the mode on your device from DV to HDV, or from HDV to DV, and then re-open the application again.
Tip: Use an Easy Setup to play back non-default HDV format footage on your HDV device. You can use Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express to make your HDV device play back footage in its non-default HDV format. For example, maybe you have a 1080i60 HDV device and want to play back footage that was recorded as 1080i50. Or perhaps you have a 1808i50 HDV device and you want to play back footage that was recorded as 1080i60. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Connect your camera to your computer.
2. In Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express, choose an HDV preset Easy Setup that matches the format of the tape's footage (you don't need to restart Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express).
3. Your device's LCD display should automatically display a switch to 60 or 50, indicating the type of media that's being played.

Playing back non-default DV format footage on your HDV device You can also use your HDV device to play back footage in its non-default DV format too. For example, maybe you have a 1080i60 HDV device and want to play back footage that was recorded as DV-PAL. Or maybe you have a 1080i50 HDV device and want to play back footage that was recorded as DV-NTSC. If so, follow these steps:

1. Make sure that your device is in DV/DVCAM mode.
2. Put your device into Play/Pause mode, then open the Log and Capture window in Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express.
3. Make sure that your device's LCD (or other readout screen) displays the same format as your tape or Final Cut Pro / Final Cut Express will misinterpret what type of device you have.

Tip: Avoid recording both HDV and DV formats on the same tape. Use separate tapes whenever you want to record in a different format. If you need to record over existing footage in a different format (for example, you have a tape with DV-PAL on it, but you want to record over it with HDV 1080i50), it's a good idea to black and code the tape, or completely record over the old footage with contiguous recording in the new format. If the tape contains even a second of, say, DV in the middle of an HDV tape (or vice versa), it could cause unexpected results later when you try to capture video from that tape.

Open iMovie and set it to capture DV. (Click the camera shaped icon opposed to the siscor scissor shape) When you see a blue screen that says (camera connected) and the image pops on screen of image from tape on camcorder set in play mode, you hit the import button and it begins to capture digital movie using DV compression of whatever you have on tape. You should be able to control your camcorder with the video controllers underneath the project window to make selections for the in and outpunts on the tape you wish to capture. Then switch to edit mode by clicking on the scissor button and import the movies you just captured or use them from the clips menu, etc. renedr movie back to tape, if you wish by clicking back and forth from edit mode (scissors) and capture mode (camera silo) and render to and from tape.
