What make/model of welder are you referring to?

Get someone with electrical knowledge to test the circuits. Do you mean an Arc Welder or do you mean a MIG Welder? They are completely different in operation.

Your question is not clear, but if it is, your welder should have an handle to switch from dc+to dc- and ac, it wont do it on its own

It's likely that your pedal is the problem. Pull the cover and check it electrically - these have been problematic in the past. You can further troubleshoot by selecting constant output and test the output.

check you ground cable, try to strike and ark on the ground cable, if no ark test the ground circuit if the circuit is ok you will need to have the transformer tested and for that you need some specal tools.

If your battery is in good condition (check this one first, take it to your nearest autozone they'd do it for free) then you need to replace the voltage regulator, this one is located on the back of the unit under the back cover of the main engine, it looks like a black rectangle with two cables. For teh second problem, check your fine voltage button and increase it as needed until the rod does not stick to the metal, but not higher enough to pierce or burn thru it.

it sounds like it has droped a one of the phase's, but it could be the liner inside the hand peice is not the right length and is not earthing properly
