the face plate is what has your anti theft code stored in it so a replacement unit from another set probably will not fix the problem unless you can reset the code
talk with a radio repair shop before you spend cash to make sure that the fix is possible
make sure the connections are clean on face plate and base make sure no grease or anything like that failing this then contact the makers or even place of purchase usually as long as you have the face plate and the whole unit they will replace the face for free but you might need to show them both as stolen ones people were getting the face for free so they stopped this so get in touch with makers or even place of purchase they should replace for you.
How old is device?
Have you tried pushing the face in whilst pressing it on further just in case the connections are not touching.
another suggestion, I am not sure if you can do it (pull the head unite out) , but there is a Phone wire. (not sure of the color i think its either white or green) on the back of the head unit. if this is a naked wire (since you bought the car used it may be) and it grounds it will cause the player to go into phone mute mode>> check that out and tape up the wire if its exposed.
