It keeps asking for a password (dvp5990)

Try using the password 136900. If this works for you, then using your remote, access the general setup menu and choose the Disc Unlock option.
Hope this helps!!

Won't play any discs, just says "no disc"

Same problem here. I noticed in my case that "disc lock" in the general menu is highlighted, but I cannot get access to it, even though I have the correct password. USB access/avi's work just fine, but no DVD access. It hardly even spins up the disk! I've reflashed the firmware properly and successfully several times, but I still cannot play DVDs. Sorry I don't have an answer for you, but at least you know you're not alone, and I'm looking for one as well. IF I have success, I'll post it here.

Philips dvp 5992 Disk drive wont open

HELLO MY NAME IS ANDREI
I THINK YOU MIGHT OF LOCK THE DISC. BY DOING THIS YOU BLOCK THE PLAYBACK OF THE CURRENT DISC. SUBSEQUENT ACESS TO A LOCKED DISC REQUIRES A SIX DIGIT PASSWORD THE DEFAULT PASSWORD IS 136900. THIS WILL UNLOCK THE DISC LOCK FEATURE. MAKE SURE YOU GO YO SETUP AND CHOOSE UNLOCK DISC LOCK PERMANENTLY OR IT WILL KEEP DOING IT EVERYTIME YOU PLAY THE SAME DISC. HOPE THIS MIGHT OF SOLVED YOUR PROBLEM.

How to make DVP5990/37 Region Free

First I recommend that you upgrade the factory firmware to the latest version. The current version is .31 and available here. Click "I accept" to accept the license agreement and start the download. Open the zip file and burn the file named DVP5990_37.bin to a CD. Put the CD in the DVD player and it will begin the upgrade and open the DVD tray. Remove the CD but leave the DVD tray in the open position. After just under 10 minutes (6-8) the DVD player will report that the update was successful and close the DVD tray. Press the setup button, go to preferences scroll down the choices (past the bottom of the screen) and select reset to default values. The player will reboot.

Next press Setup
select the Preference menu
Press 1,3,8,9,3,1 on the remote control.
Use the up/down arrows to select region "0" which means all regions.

If you ever get a disc that won't play correctly due to a region error, just use the code above to select the correct region for the disc and you will still be able to play it.
