I have been taught to change the hoses every 3 years, and the belts between 50 to 75 thousand miles. Every once in a while, check the belts for cracking, splitting, and uneven wear. I do keep spare belts in the trunk, in the tool box. you never know. hope this helps

SOURCE: When is it recommended to change the serpentine

Not so much a mileage thing. It is wear and stretch that you need to observe. If belt has cracks, chunks missing or your tensioner is at the max position change it! Why take any chances? If it breaks, you will be S.O.L. and stranded

Idles rough when at stop lights etc.

Depending on vehicle mileage, you are likely ready for a tuneup that would include new

1. Spark plugs
2. Spark plug wires
3. ignition cap/rotor, if used
4. new serpentine belt(s)
5. Fuel system cleaner such as Chevron Techron or Regane
6. New timing chain/belt if mileage warrants--check owner's manual

Barring serious mechanical issues, the above items should eliminate the idling problem OR make it much easier for a shop to trace the real problem using a OBDII Scan Tool.

Our 1997 Mazda Protege keeps breaking serpentine belts, gauls them up

Remove the belt and make sure all of the accesories spin freely. All should spin freely except the crank shaft which is the lowest pully. If they all spin freely then I would say it is most likely the tensioner itself and they should be replaced on high mileage vehicles anyway.

Serpentinebelt

On almost all serpentine belt systems there is a tensioner pulley that most usually has a 3/8 drive square hole to use a ratchet or breaker bar. Insert, pull and belt comes off..
