Sign on to Yahoo! Mail with your user ID and password. Go to the "Contacts" list to see who is online.

Find the name of the person you want to communicate with once you know who is online. Click on the name to start a chat session.

Wait
for the conversation window to appear on your email page. Type your
message in the input box at the bottom of the conversation window. Hit
"Enter" or the "Send" button next to the input box.

See
your messages in the main conversation area, which appears above the
message input box in the same conversation window. Find your friend's
replies also in the conversation area.

Receive
an incoming chat message while using Yahoo! email. An orange tab with
the friend's name appears, indicating that you have a new chat message.
Click on the tab to start the instant conversation. Repeat Step 3 to
reply to your friend's message.

Switch
to chat from email if the recipient goes online. A notice appears at
the bottom of the email window to indicate that the contact is
available to chat. Press the "Chat Now" link that appears with the
notice, or click the "Chat" icon at the top of the email to convert it
to chat mode. The email window converts to the chat window with your
message.

Turn
the chat sound alerts on and off by going to "Options," then "Mail
Options" at the top of the page. Find the option, "Play a sound when a
new chat message is received." Check the box next to it if you want to
hear an alert, or uncheck it if you don't. Press "Save Changes" when
you're done.
