What OS are you running? I don't see any full-feature software but the Samsung site lists a print driver, a scan driver, a universal print driver and a universal scan driver for Windows 2000 through Win7 x64. Similar drivers are also available for the Mac OSX. I'm not certain of the features in the "unified driver" for Linux. The full-feature software is available for Windows.
To find these drivers, go to
http://www.samsung.com/ph/consumer/monitor-peripherals-printer/printer-multifunction/mono-multifunction/SCX-4300/XSS/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=support . Click on the Downloads tab and then select Driver. The windows files are all .exe files.
For the SmartThru software go to the above link and select Software instead of Driver. With this software, you will be able to launch a scan from the printer if the monitoring program is running. You should be able to start a scan from the computer with any OS and the Samsung drivers.
Windows XP, Vista and 7 can all acquire scans with Windows software. You can use Paint in all three (File > Import from Camera or Scanner > New Scan). Vista and Win7 add Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan). Vista came with Photogallery and it acquires scans like Paint. (You can download it for XP or Win7.) The Mac also can acquire scans with included software.
One issue that can cause a scanner problem is a bad cable. Scanning requires bidirectional communication with the printer and thus may fail when the printer works. Replace the data cable and make sure to use a direct connection (no USB hub or print server) if you can launch the scan but then it stops.
I hope this helps.
