If compressor stops in middle, check the following.
1.Thermostat setting must be minimum +3 degree than your room temp
2. Check it's in heat "mode"
3. Check indoor and outdoor coils are clean.
4. Check fan motor is working alright.
5. Outside sensor and room air sensor is placed correctly.
6. Gas pressure is o.k
7.Check compressor is overheated, even all the above is o.k.
The unit does have a defrost control board outside that after running a while will check to see if it needs to go into defrost for a bit... it will shut unit down for approx 10 mins but should keep the compressor going unless they have a outdoor thermost installed set to lock out at a specific temperature... i have been a a/c guy for 18 years and the last few days really need to run the emergency heat instead of heat pump... i know still doesnt change that your unit is stopping in mid cycle ,but maybe it is bringing on the auxillary heat inside when it does this... does the fan outside continue to blow if so then it is still making a call for heat pump and you have something like a weak capacitor on the compressor or the thermal overload in the compressor is bad... if the fan and compressor shut down the call is being dropped for the heat pump due to a lock out device or a low or high pressure switch which could be from low on freon... hope this helps some....good luck
