When looking thru the menu of the printer, I got a "79 error" readout with a scrolling "power off - power on" readout as well. The printer/fax/scanner is totally frozen. Tried disconnecting from power source for a few minutes without change when repowered and then tried disconnecting from PC without any change.

HP has now admitted their firmware update causes an irreversible corruption in the formatter board. It is hard to get them to do this, but I understand they will repair at no cost if they can determine that you did install this update.

HP Officejet Pro 8500 (A909a) All-in-One Printer This model has a two-line display.

1. Unplug the power cord from the HP All-in-One.
2. Wait for 20 seconds.
3. Press and hold # and 3 while plugging in the power cord to the HP All-in-One.
4. Release the buttons after the HP All-in-One starts up.

1. Touch the Setup icon.
2. Scroll to and touch Tools .
3. Scroll to and touch Restore Factory Defaults . A Defaults Restored message displays.
4. Press the Cancel button to return to the main menu.

To reset waste ink counter:
Press Menu-Scan-Copy-Scan to enter service menu.
Use arrow keys to scroll to "Service menu counter access".
Press OK.
Use arrow keys to scroll to "ABS-M DOT COUNT"
Press Copy.
Use arrow keys to reset count to zero.
Press OK.
Press Stop/Reset.

Reset for mp130
turn on the printer press menu
press scan, copy, scan to enter service mode
use> to get to nvram
set ABS-M level to 0
Set ABS-P level to 0
Press stop to exit..........Done

• Unplug
• Hold down "*" & "enter/ menu buttons"
• While holding down both buttons, turn power on
• Wait until something like "initialize" shows up on the display
• Let go of buttons
• Wait until display reads "ready"

Go to messaging thru your main menu. Thru messaging scroll to bottom to settings. next go to text auto view click this. If it looks like i believe most menus are it should say on / on plus readout and off. just choose off.

A solution:

79 errors are often fatal. Your only hope is to get it back to READY, then update the firmware before it reverts back to 79 ERROR. The other option is to replace the formatter, but it would be about the same cost to replace the whole machine.

Make sure the answering machine is turned on for both lines. To check settings: Scroll, using BACK and FWD, to desired setting. 1. Press MENU 2. Scroll to "ANSWERING SYSTEM MENU" then press SELECT 3. Scroll to "LINE 1 SETTINGS" and press SELECT 4. Scroll to "ANSWERING SYSTEM ON/OFF." Check to see if it is set to "ON," as this is the default setting. 5. Exit MENU and Repeat steps 1 thru 4 for LINE 2 SETTINGS. I don't know if you have Acrobat Reader for .pdf files but below is a link to the owner's manual for this phone.
