When looking thru the menu of the printer, I got a "79 error" readout with a scrolling "power off - power on" readout as well. The printer/fax/scanner is totally frozen. Tried disconnecting from power source for a few minutes without change when repowered and then tried disconnecting from PC without any change.

The 79 error is an internal firmware error.
www.hp.com
Download the firmware. The printer has to be ready to install it.
If you can't get it to READY, you will have to get a firmware recovery DIMM from HP.
Or try a local printer repair shop.
Because this is an old printer, you may not be able to get a recovery DIMM.

Hewlett Packard Laserjet 2605dn Printer: Error 79 after firmware update

HP has now admitted their firmware update causes an irreversible corruption in the formatter board. It is hard to get them to do this, but I understand they will repair at no cost if they can determine that you did install this update.

Error 79 on hp printer?

The cause :-----A 79 error can be the result of a problem with the network print server that services the printer. To resove the problem:--- When troubleshooting a 79 error, first open the Printer folder from the Start menu on the Print server to make sure there are no jobs pending. A 79 error can also indicate a failure of a printer add-on component, such as an MIO card or a RAM module. All add-ons should be removed and then added back to the printer one by one to determine which module may be at fault. This will help.Good luck.

My hp laserjet 3030 keeps reading 79 error power on power off

79 errors are often fatal. Your only hope is to get it back to READY, then update the firmware before it reverts back to 79 ERROR. The other option is to replace the formatter, but it would be about the same cost to replace the whole machine.
