Sounds like it's driver related try going to Lenovos site and downloading chipset driver and any hotkey drivers you can find.

try to download AC97 driver for your sound card

if u have internet connected to the same system , please go to start > control panel > device manager > sound card > right click > select update drivers online .....best of luck

please reinstall the sound drivers from your motherboard cd otherwise visit the compaq website and download the drivers for the sound.
