E18

Hi,

Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.
The problem usually happens because dirt or sand get into the lens mechanism. To repair it, visit this link and follow all the steps.Rating the solution is highly appreciated..

E18 screen msg

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Don't want to get your hopes up too high, but here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

What does E18 mean?

Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off. This is caused by dirt in between the telescoping portions of the lens. You can clean this with compressed air, generally. Blow air all around the turret sections of the lens. you can also GENTLY push the lens inward ( have the lens extended and take the battery out... then push inward...)

Error E18, the zoom is blocked

Hi

Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.

There are six screws holding the metal frame of the camera body together, two on each side, and two on the bottom. Remove all screws, pop the strap-hook plate (sorry, probably not the most technical term there), then gently lift the front plate off by pulling up from the bottom, and remove the back plate in the same fashion. These should come off relatively easily. This is what the camera should look like as you remove the plates:
img-5340-thumb.jpg?w=324&h=217
  1. Now, looking from the top of the camera, you should see a small motor on the left side, as shown below (it’s beneath the cable with a “22” written on it):
    img-5346-thumb.jpg?w=324&h=217
  2. Take your screwdriver (or another small instrument) and gently try to rotate the plastic piece attached to the motor on the left side, as shown below:
    img-5359-thumb.jpg?w=324&h=217
  3. At this point, try placing the battery back in the camera (if you have removed it), turn the camera to one of the capture modes, and press the power button. If all went well, your lens should now be able to extend and retract properly.
Please do rate the solution as FixYa and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

When I turn on my PowerShot A70, it comes on and immediately shuts itself off and the Error E18 appears on the screen.

Canon Powershot's error E18 has to do with the lens:
If it appears on a black LCD with E18 written on the corner, it is mostly due to the lens getting stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.
I am giving below a link which will help you with E18 problem.

Camera frozen, emits a buzz and "E18" in the lower left hand corner

Assuming you have tried the repair people on this site first, and need to follow it up further, I have found a site which gives some insight and proposes a fix if you would like to view it, it's at www.e18error.com They explain the problem like so:

Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.

Apparently, people who posted about this incident on forums say they had to send the camera for repair and that Canon has horrible customer support and response time.

They also say how you may be able to fix it yourself - which is nice - well worth a visit! Hope this helps
