heck to see if the fan is working, if not replace it.If the fan is working and spinning freely, then clean the vents and remove any dust/lint.You may need to remove the fan/heatsink off the CPU and clean off the
old heatsink compound and replace it with fresh heatsink compound and
reinstall the fan/heatsink.
When using the laptop, make sure it is on a firm flat surface and none of the vents are obstructed.
Gaming (and graphics application) consumes more CPU/ Processor
resources and due to the heavy processing the PC (CPU & GPU) heatup. Excessive
heatup beyond usual is alarming and PC shuts down by itself when the processor/ GPU temperature exceeds the safe temperature limit. There are mainly two reasons for heatup. Laptop heating issue generally occurs due to fan
failure, which may damage the system, if not checked properly. Another
most likely cause of overheating is the dust present inside the laptop, which clogs
the fan and heatsink. 1. Make sure the fan is running. (if not it needs replacement) 2. Clean the fan and heat sink (thermal module). Click here for laptop disassembly instructions and refer to Removing the System Fan/Thermal Module
after removing the outer cover. Take out the fan and heat sink. clean
them with the help of tooth brush and put it back. Also, repair manual
can be searched online or downloaded for referrence. The
procedure is very simple, but if you are not comfortable with working
inside electronics, I suggest that you should get you laptop checked
by a professional for servicing (if required). I believe immediate
action is required to prevent any damage to your machine and data.
Hope it Helps! Let me know if i could be of any further assistance. CreativeTECH
What is happening is that the processors thermal shut down safety is activating. Cleaning the fan and vents was a good first step but there is something else that needs to be done in order to make sure the processor is not overheating. First, make sure the fan is running at all times. If it is for the duration you're observing and the laptop is still shutting off, then the problem may lie at the heatsink-processor interface. This is where the heatsink sints on the processor face and has a thin layer of thermal paste between the two. If there has been a breakdown in the thermal paste and it is not doing its job, then you can have a thermal shutdown.
Now, the nice thing about your system is that you can clean the heatsink fan and grills just by taking off the bottom panel. Unplug the wiring harness for the fan and unscrew the heatsink off the processor slot. Clean the surfaces well with alchohol and let dry, then apply a very thin layer of thermal paste to the heatsink, screw it back down on the processor. Now leave this panel access door off while you power the system back up, that way you can easily observe what is going on in this area. Make sure to use good clean compressed air from an pffice supply chain to blow out all vent and compartments. Do not use the sir while the system is powered on just in case some condensation escapes from the can.. Good luck, below is the link to the service manual for that laptop. An illustrated guide of the disassembly starts on page 70.
Clear the dust from the heatsink and fan assembly. Most laptops have vents on the bottom and outlet vents on the side or back of the laptop. The fan covers on the base are held in place by screws. The fan is usually over the CPU and is held in place with 3 or 4 spring loaded screws, remove these will allow you to remove the fan and heatsink assmbly.
If there isn't vents on the bottom of the laptop, only on the sides and back edges, then the heatsink and fan assembly is usually located under the keyboard and you need to remove the keyboard to clean/remove the dust off the heatsink/fan.
After cleaning and before re-assembly apply a thin film of heatsink compound on top of the CPU.
