the microwave sounds okay, but there's no heat, one of the internal
door switches, the high voltage circuitry, or the circuit board may have
a problem.
Are you getting 110VAC on the primary leads of the high voltage transformer when you press "Start" to begin cooking?
If not, yhen it may simply be a bad cook relay (I do board repair) or a bad bottom or inside top door switch. See http://www.microwavecontrol.com/doorsw.htm

The Magnotron goes out on many of the lower priced models in the first yr.,(and some of the higher end ones too!) As the components there do most of the hard work. Better to just find a recycler who takes them and scrap it.
As for the replacement that sounds like an excellent idea!
Our GE over-the-range microwave stopped producing heat yesterday while warming part of the T-giving feast. Everything else (fan, control panel, light) works fine.
After disassembly and testing last night, I discovered a defective "secondary door switch." Your Kenmore uses a similar switch (~$19 on-line), and that might be the problem. But it also could be other things, such as a bad thermal cut-out.
If you know anyone who's handy with a multimeter, most of the basic diagnostics seem to be pretty straightforward.
