Xbox 360 turns on, but nothing shows on the screen

I recently bought an Xbox 360 from ebay for $10. It doesn't work of course. I had to go to my friends house to test the system because no cables came with the core console. When we put in a game, the Xbox 360 made the typical noises, but there was nothing on the television screen. The TV is fine and all the cables are fine because they work with his Xbox 360 which is the same model as mine. We think there is just a problem with displaying what the Xbox 360 is reading because it sounds like a working Xbox. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is ridiculous. Mine has the same problem, I wouldn't mind if it weren't for Fable 2, I play my PS3 way more but I really miss Fable 2. I can't believe Microsoft has the gall to make me pay £78 for repair!!! And it broke down only a few days after my warranty ran out!!!

Yeah, I was playing on Halo 3, watching a video, then the colours go all distorted.. I could see what it was, but it just wasn't right.. So i turned it of, and back on, it was fine, but it happened again.. did the same thing a few times, until, finally, It just stopped appearing on the screen. I can hear all the sounds, but the screen just stays the same.. I think the video card burnt out, but i was only playing for 10 minutes :

If the person that you bought it from on E-Bay had an HD Television. Then the Xbox console is set into HD from the Display options. If your TV is not HD, then It will not display. It can also be the other way around, if His TV is standard and yours is HD. Also try looking at the RCA's(The Part that plugs into the 360) And you will see a slider. Switch the slider, then turn it on. Tell me if that works, if Not, tell me and I will tell you what to press on your 360 controller to set the other menu. Hope this helps.

Hey guys. I recently had this ongoing issue with the XBOX turning on but nothing being displayed on the TV screen. The weird thing was was that the ring on the XBOX did not synch and on the controller all lights stayed lid up on the ring. So, technically, it's obvious that it's the A/V cable. I unplugged and plugged in the A/V cable about 6 times back and forth, and Wah-lah. Xbox was working at normal. IDK the cause, but I assume one of the pins wasn't making proper contact in either the port of the A/V cable it self. So, hope this resolves everyones' "powering on but nothing showing." :)

Not showing on my tv

If your Xbox 360 does not have display you need to stop the heat getting to the chips. You can actually do this yourself as many have in this forum using the recommended Xbox 360 Repair guide.

Basically the guide will show you how to stop the heat build up with videos and household items, of course if you are in doubt send it in.

It has a preview video on the website.

Or of course you can send it in to have it fixed.

In essence with this error if you stop the heat build up on the chips it will work fine for you.

Their is 3 red lights on the power button and nothing will show up on the screen of my xbox 360 arcade

I am sorry to report that you have the terrible red ring of death. This happens when there is a fatal glitch on the motherboard of the XBox due to overheating. There's nothing you could've done, it's just bad engineering on Microsoft's part. Do you happen to have the original receipt? If you bought it recently, it may be under warranty. You may also be able to exchange it at the store you bought it.

Can't connect anything to Xbox 360

If you have warranty still on the Xbox, and if it is new when you bought it, take it back to the store, with the reciept of course that you bought it from and get a brand new replacement.

If you got one off of ebay, try to ship it to the address that the warranty has.
