If you ever have this problem, it is because you have had something in the way of the embroidery arm at the back of the machine, so it has not been able to move freely; you'll get a terrible noise as the machine is unable to do what it wants, slips gears or something and then can't bring the arm to its home position. But fear not, i have found if you turn the machine off and gently push the arm back home to touch the machine as it is the start position, when you turn it on, it will work fine and no harm done. just make sure the arm can move freely before you start embroidery!

My Janome memory craft 8000 will only sew backwards and the screen shows step motor error. the machine is 19 years old. Is this fixable?

step motor error may mean the embroidery arm is out of position gently push it back home towards the machine and see if this helps. If the mother board is gone, they will not be able to replace it as its so old, but you may be able to get an 8000 or 9000 on ebayso you can still use your discs if you don't want to get a new machine
