I need to replace the refrigerator from our garage. I bought a simple kenmore with the freezer on the top, only to find out that this type of freezer/ refrigerator will not work in the garage. I need to know what type of refrigerator will work in an environment where the temperatures get below 45 degrees.

The temp setting for the freezer impacts that temp in the refrigerator. What is the temp setting? How cold is the room that it is in.

Look at what time the defrost timer is set to. It may just be as simple as resetting the time or you may need to replace it .

Most likely, you never notice the light bulb in your freezer or refrigerator until it is not working. Then it is time to replace the bulb. This is especially important with freezers, which are often in areas with poorer lighting, like basements or garages. Fortunately, the task is a simple one.
Instructions

1 Unplug the freezer to prevent an accidental shock when you remove the light bulb.

2 Open the door of the freezer, look at the top inside edge of the freezer, below the door seal and back about 1 to 2 inches from the edge. You will see a small plastic or metal panel that protects the bulb from damage and shields your eyes from the direct light of the bulb when the door is opened. Reach behind the guard and remove the bulb by twisting it to the left.

3 Put your new bulb in by inserting it into the socket and twisting it to the right to screw it in. Be sure you use a freezer bulb--it is built a little tougher and is the correct wattage. You can find them at appliance or hardware stores. Plug the freezer back in to test operation of the bulb.

The problem is with the garage temperature. The temperature sensor for the refrigerator is in the fridge compartment, but the evap coils are in the freezer. Refrigerators were designed to work in an air conditioned space. When they are put into unheated spaces, it does not work well. The fridge thermostat typically is set to 40 deg F. If the outside temperature is close to that, then it does not turn on the compressor as much so the freezer will have a hard time staying below freezing.

There are garage refrigerator kits for people who put fridges in un heated garages in the winter. They just simple electric heaters that warm the fridge's thermostat to cause the compressor to run more often. This helps the fridge to maintain temperatures better in the freezer compartment. The same thing can be accomplished by putting a small wattage bulb in the refrigerator compartment. Just remember to remove it during the warm weather otherwise you will pay a large electricity bill in the summer months.

You have your own answer there - You have overfrosting and icing up behind the freezer, this will affect proper cooling - also if you have seperate freezer and refrigerator controls, it's possible the damper is not opening properly to let the cool air in. But in your case it sounds like a defrost problem. You will need to have a service person inspect your control board and defrost timer components - sometimes it's as simple as a board replacement due to a burnt resistor these things are the most common causes.

Sears is technically correct. It wouldn't work with the old coolant either. The principle is simple. The refrigerator is the same temp as your garage - it is not running. It must be in a 60 degree room to work properly. The sensor to turn it on is in the fresh food compartment, and it never calls for cooling; therefore it appears you freezer only is out - but they both work together. Hope this helps!
