With respect to Canon MP160 color usage during greyscale printing: Unfortunately, with many of the newer inkjet printer models & printer drivers, printing in greyscale actually consumes more color ink than normal draft printing. If you wish to save on color ink, it is suggested to do one of the following as available in your specific printer driver/software:
-Print in Normal - Draft mode (or super draft if available), plain paper.
-Print in Black & White mode only* - Draft mode on plain paper (typically this is the best way to save on ink/printing costs).
-For internet page printing, print using CleanPrint (3rd party software for printing most internet-based content from all major internet browsers. NOTE: not affiliated with Inkjet411):http://www.formatdynamics.com/cleanprint-4-0/
-Keep printer on at all times; power up cycles typically consume large amounts of ink (per Consumer Reports, Aug 2013 issue).
* Most printer models will still consume a small percentage of color ink due to normal ink/printer maintenance, such as between job 'spitting'. The purpose is to ensure the printhead is maintained to avoid clogging.

Regarding Canon PGI-40 or CLI-41 cartridge repurchase or ink cartridge refilling, if you unable to find a retail / refill store close to you and you are trying to cut ink costs, may we suggest you try a remanufactured ink cartridge from http://www.inkplicity.com/ as their ink cartridges typically have the lowest cost in the USA, have a high reliability rating, come with a 1-year warranty and provide free shipping for all orders above $20 (available to US residents only).

Printer wont accept if we select black only option if it contain no black catridge
Ink is a lubricant for the print heads. Some color ink is used even if you only print in black or vice-versa. If you printed with black ink missing, you could destroy that print head from the friction of running without ink to lubricate it. That's why most printers won't allow you to print with black ink missing even if you aren't using it. That's the case with your Canon printer.
If you allow a color to go empty, the residual ink in the head could clog and become permanently blocked. You would never be able to print that color again. So always replace ink cartridges as soon as they are empty.
SOURCE: won't print with just black ink cartridge
A part solution is print/properties/maintenance/ink cartridge settings/select black only.
You do initially have to buy another color cartridge but you won'thave to buy another expensive color cartridge again in the future.

SOURCE: I just want to print a word document in black ink, but...........
Hi, this is not a solution because I don't think there is one apart from buying new inks. Epson and all other inkjet printers do this to prevent the coloured print head nozzles from getting blocked. If they are not used for a long time the ink dries up and blocks the nozzles. Epson recommends printing at least once a month with all colours to prevent this. Whenever the printer is turned on it performs a head clean, this is why the coloured inks get used over time even though they are not used for printing. ( Also Epson gets to sell you more cartridges)

No you need functioning colour cart for black to work.
SOURCE: I would like to print black with one color cartridge empty
If you take the empty cartridge out and put a small piece of electrical tape over the little window on the front, the printer will think the ink is full.
SOURCE: wouldn't print black-and-white if the color cartridge is empty
Select true black and white. Any other setting uses the colour cartridge to sharpen the printing.
