Lately, I have received some text messages with the usual notification symbol of the envelope. However, recently I have been getting, in addition to this symbol, another envelope with an "F" on it. What is this? Sometimes it goes away after I open the text messages...this last time, it hasn't done away.

Envelope usually indicated a text message. Usually, if you have unread text messages your little envelope will have a number one or number two, etc in red on it.
You will need to go to your text message icon to open your text message screen.. It might be called *Inbox* but it's not email only text or SMS messages.
This means you have a text message, look for something that says "messages" and go in and read them all. After you read them or delete them the envelope will go away, if you have problems ask someone to help you find your text messages in your phone.
On the Personalization screen, press Home screen. On this screen, make
sure that "Active" is enabled. Then press Mode settings, then Home
screen applications, then Enabled applications. On that screen, you
will see a list with squares some of which are ticked and others not.
The ticked items appear on your active home screen. Scroll through the
list and tick the Message notification box. Hope this helps!
Why am I receiving a memory full notification?
Memory full warning notifications are shown once the SMS memory reaches 80% full, which is 80 out of 100 SMS.
The notifications show up every time on receiving a new message. On reaching 100%, "Memory full notification" message is shown and no new messages will be received until we make space for incoming messages by deleting some from the inbox.
Memory full warning notices are shown only if "Auto Erase Inbox" is set to Off in Messaging settings (Menu -> Settings -> Messaging). If set to On, then these notices are not shown. By default this is set to Off.
you must be using an unlocked phone. This is what happens when the voicemail system tries to let you know when you receive or delete a voicemail. Since you are not using a phone designed for that voicemai system your phone does not know how to interpret it so you get the weird message instead of the indicator letting you know you have voicemail. If it really bugs you your carrier should be able to turn off the notification.
