Repairing or replacing old tape decks

I have an very old reel-to-reel Sony tape deck (Sony Tapecorder TC-355) and a lot of old reel to reel music tapes I want to re-record the tapes onto CDs and am not sure if the motor is working properly on the tape deck. Does anybody still service these things or stock parts for them, i.e., motors?

Ditto for my Technics M222 dubbing tape cassette recorder,

Hi m522posner

There is a surprising interest in "vintage" hifi products these days. Your tape machines probably needs new belts. Check this site out. You can get spares for your tape machine here. Belt kits are $17. He does repairs also, but the transport to and from may be an issue for you. I suggest emailing Bob, he may be able to refer you to someone in CA > I could do the repairs, but I am in Australia. :)

You could have a go at freshening up the belts yourself:)

Is there an internal speed adjustment to fix tape speed selector that has no affect on tape speed. This is on Sony TC-440 reel to reel.

There is a cam with solidified grease on a lot of Sony Mechanisms. The deck need to be cleaned of the grease they used that solidifies and then a better grease such as Lubriplate 105 should be applied.
The Idlers need to be reconditioned as well. The Sony units can be labor intensive due to this required work but I do fix them when people want them done. I am in the Chicago area as Skywave Tape Deck Repair

Repairing Motor on A Sony TC-350 Tapecorder

The AC motors in these decks usually do not fail and the only time I had trouble with one was a Motor run capacitor. The older unit are full of mechanical slide arms and Idlers that all need lubrication. The total job will need to be done to return it to working order. I wor on decks 12 hours a day.

My sony tapecorder tc-330 vu meter shows only one side working with the needle fluctuating, what causes that?

I have had that in a TC-366, the diode and a capacitor were the reason but you will need Technician tools, meters ans a soldering station to get the unit fixed. Sometimes the meter movement gets
knocked out due to abuse or shock. Does it move at any time as when you turn on the deck?

I have a Sony TC 630 Reel to Reel Stereo Tapecorder..Pinch Wheel is sticking and will only move when forced and brushes as well...Any help ?

Sounds to me like your Sony has a common problem among vintage reel tape decks..dried /frozen grease/ and or a lack of lubrication. carefully apply a tiny bit of fine lube oil, like 3in1, on the swing mechanism that carries the pinch roller...(you may have to remove the front metal deck face to fully access the swinging pinch roller mechanism) ) . do NOT get any oil on the rubber pinch roller..(best to make sure after by scrubbing the pinch roller surface with a cotton swab lightly dipped in non chemical household cleaner, like 409, or awesome orange i get at the dollar store. Then use the dry end of the swab to ensure the pinch roller is dry. .The pressure pads should swing upward and press the tape against the heads when in play/record mode..if they do not swing up, they are binding/ or out of adjustment....they are spring loaded so when the reel deck is in the stop position the spring loaded pressure pads are held down...play/record mode releases them to freely swing up and press on the tape against the heads.
