First clean the coils. When I've seen coils freeze, the likely problem is a coolant (refrigerant) leak. This you can not repair yourself since the damage in the pipe must be fixed after removing the remaining coolant. Then new coolant could be added at the correct pressure. Sometimes, the freezing problem can damage the fan motor but that is a side effect not usually the cause.
I hope this helps.

(Dehumidifiers and air conditioners can also have the coils freeze if their filter is clogged.)
usually means Freon charge is low, you might have a leak..... also, filters don't catch everything. over time what gets past the filter can be trapped in underside of the evaporative coil on top of your furnace..... outside condenser coils may be caked with debris, improper air flow threw coils can produce liquid Freon back to evaporative coil causing it to freeze..
hosing the condenser down will resolve freezing up too
i know this is not directly answering your question but dust and dirt should not be significant enough to hault normal operating function or the fridge, more than likely the coolant with in the coils needs to be drained and replaced or maybe even the compressor itself. I would clean the coils, replace the coolant, in that order check progress each step of the way. The safest way to clean coils is with a vacuum cleaner and slender crevice attachment just try not to damage them
defrost has nothing to do with freezing.its for thawing the frost off the evap coils. are the coils in the freezer frosty? if the fans are running and the compressor is running and no frost on coils then freon is leaking or compr. valves are shot.
Turn off the refrigerator.Remove the freezer shelves/bins and rear panel. Take a hair dyer and thaw the ice completely. The defrost heater will be across the bottom of the freezer coil. The defrost thermostat will be attached to a refrigerant coil at the top of the freezer coil.It is about the size of a quarter and 1/2 inch thick. There will be wires from top to bottom on the sides of the coil.
The problem is freeze up. Bad door gasket or too much window shopping are the biggest issues. Could be low gas. Either take off the back freezer panel and defrost or unplug for 2 days to defrost fully. Oh, and clean the condenser coil. Then, let's see what the unit does.
