Alrighty
sounds like there is a major problem with the hardisk controller inside
did you drop it?
spill anything on it?
whack it?
it sounds like its pretty damaged to be "clicking like a clock!"
if your really desperate you can try opening it up and removing the hardrive itself and opening up your computer and connect it straight to your motherboard. with either sata cable or IDE depending on how old the drive is.
i can't guarantee that you will be able to get anything off it but its worth a shot!
then you will have to buy a new one
and this time don't abuse it! ;-)
hope this helps,ben

I had the same problem - and found the cause NOT to be the drive, but rather the power cord/supply to the drive.
Here is what I did....as I worked through the list of reasons the drive may not be showing, I'd surmised the problem was not computer / connection based, but rather with the drive itself - which had a faint clicking noise as it cycled (generally a bad sign it seems).
However, what I also noticed was that a similar noise (though a beep vs. click) was coming from the power cord/supply to the malfunctioning drive. Fortunately, I had a different power on hand from another drive I have - and when I used that, it worked just fine.
And, last but not least - when I tried using that power supply on the other different drive - that drive did not work either (also making the faint clicking noise).
So bottom line, it was the power supply - NOT the drive which was really good news, and enabled me to access/retrieve all my data....and not have to pay upwards of $2k to retrieve data.
Hope this too helps!!!
I am having a similar problem. I took the thing apart. The issue seems to be the power going to the hard drive. I connected the hard drive to the PC's power and it is running great. Maybe Maxtor can address the power issue.
